Disgruntled
We all know that this was a terrific season in which the Dolphins played great football en route to restoring some order to the turmoil that had over taken the organization. They didn't win the Super Bowl but they satisfied us as fans personally because they made the team worth watching again.
However i think my personal concerns about whether this team will be able to win the AFC East or make the playoffs again are mounting.
I hate to put it like this, but this team seemed like lightning in a bottle. Starting just 2-4 and then catching some favorable breaks (mainly in the schedule) before reeling off 9 of 10 and winning the division. Winning 9 out of 10 games is no easy accomplishment no matter who you play, not in the NFL but you'd have to assume with our schedule on paper next year it will be a hell of a lot harder to do especially if Tom Brady is back and the Jets find a QB who doesn't completely give away games.
I don't want to say this team "overachieved" or even "got lucky" like many bitter Jets and Patriots fans are right now. We still beat the Patriots head to head, we still beat the Chargers head to head, we still beat the Broncos in Denver and the Jets in New York. So luck is out of the equation. Overachieving is too, i know players like Devone Bess had solid years, Martin, Fasano at times, Camarillo when he was healthy. But i don't believe these guys are players who will drop off the map, i think we can get the same or even more production out of them next year. But then again maybe someone like Chad Pennington did overachieve, it's hard to imagine he will be able to repeat his turnover free performances and efficient play much like David Garrard was unable to this past season. If he can't, we're fried.
Another key is health. We were lucky enough to remain a relatively healthy team this season with our key players not going down. We lost Camarillo we lost Justin Smiley and some other players had injuries that hindered their play but it was nothing too major. What if we don't have this luck next year? Lone behold Ronnie Brown's knee troubles him again and he goes down for the season. Pennington's shoulder? Knock on wood for both of those guys. Not unlikely scenarios.
Basically what i'm saying is this front office is going to have to make some CRUCIAL moves to keep this team a contender next year. On paper right now i don't think this team is going to get 11 wins next year. I think we're going to need a true #1 WR, a corner and/or safety to sure up the secondary, and a defensive lineman who can create pressure on his own against a QB. If we aren't able to address those areas, or address them with the wrong people, we're going to take a step back for sure next year.
At least Bill Parcells/Jeff Ireland/Tony Sparano is on our side.
