How differant would things be if Matt Leinart had come out the year we had the #2 pick.I believe we would have taken
him or Alex Smith and not Ronnie Brown.Don't get me
wrong ,I think Ronnie's great but we would have our
young QB going into their 3rd year with a chance maybe
to draft A.Peterson.
What's your opinion on how things could have been differant?

A stat I've read numerous times before from CK, Ronnie Brown was the best player in the draft according to 28 out of 32 GM's in the league. I think we may have been interested in Matt Leinart had he came out, but if he was taken by San Francisco, we would have definitely taken Ronnie Brown over Alex Smith.

Alex Smith has progressed but he still hasnt done anything to show he will be anything special. I'd rather have Ronnie Brown still.

Things wouldnt have been different. The 49ers would have taken Leinart... and we would have drafted Ronnie #2. Things would definatly be different for another team, like maybe the Browns, Bears, or Bucs... who may have then taken Alex Smith... but I dont think there would have been anything different on our team...

I think we were pretty high on Alex Smith as well to be honest. I'd have taken Smith because of his age and the fact that the 05 draft had some very good bargains at RB later on. I hated drafting a RB that high, but atleast it was Ronnie Brown and not Benson or Williams who have don't the overall skills Brown does.

He still got a ton of pieces working for him. Frank Gore, Vernom Davis. They just need to draft a Wide Receiver and that offense should start clicking soon.

In that draft there was alot of good RB's coming out...Plus the fact that Vernon Carey would be protecting his blindside...Matt woulda been a great pick then.

Anyone get the feeling Dmancari is going to make a return to finheaven soon? I feel a Braylon Edwards arguement coming.

With Ricky being so unpredictable I'm really glad we have Ronnie.

but, Alex Smith is the real deal. I get to watch him all the time down here, and he does have some bad games, but he has some games where he shows some really good flashes of the future

Heck I would have been thrilled with Braylon Edwards.

It was our best chance to draft a franchise QB.

The only position that merits that high a pick IMO is a QB or a LT because of the longevity of the positions.

You usually should not take a RB that high because the relatively short shelf life that RBs have.

After it was apparent Leinart was not coming out I was hoping we would draft Smith but it was not to be.

Then I was hoping we would trade down.....and draft Ronnie...who I still think was the best RB available......I am a big fan of his.

Injuries aside, I think Carnell Williams is a better back that Ronnie... Cadillac was injured last season. Having said this, I think Miami would have and should have taken Alex Smith with their first.

:driveby:

What I hated about Ronnie not so much as a player but just as a #2 pick was the fact that he was relatively old for his draft class. He's turning 26 this year and it's only his 3rd year.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda, what if, gee if only, maybe if only, what's the point?

Leinart would have been taken by SF, we would have drafted Ronnie Brown, so SF might be a little better, maybe not.

Agewise he is older but he has had relatively few carries in his collegiate and professional career.

We have to see how he holds up healthwise.
