What is a "Reach"?

Drafting a bust that you didn't want.

Like Chop originally was busted!

I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic. There are some posters who wanted to label Chop a bust because he didn’t sack someone while he was answering the phone on Draft Day.

Other than to those people, Chop was never a bust.

Verse is an entirely different creature than Chop. He’s a monster.

Chop is a better pass rusher, verse is a much better run defender.

Verse is also 2 and half years older and got to play on a line with Braden Fiske,Kobie Turner and Bryan Young, all guys that had over 7.5. Chop only had Sieler and Campbell but Campbell was more an all around great DT as opposed to a pass rushing guy. Chop with Phillips and Chubb even if they both return to only 75% of their peak will be a 12-15 sacks a year guy maybe more.

I think we need to define "reach" Im curious what everyone thinks a reach is.

Personally, I dont view a pick as a reach unless it is close to a round too early. Drafting a guy that could have gone 6-8 picks later doesnt really fit that definition to me. Unless you have guys that are clear top 5 picks in the draft staring you in the face and you choose to pick a mid to late round pick over them, I dont see a reach.

Once you pick there will normally be 32 more picks before you pick again, and if you see a guy you like and dont think he will make it to your next pick, I have no problems grabbing that guy.

We throw around the reach word a lot this time of year, so im curious what you all consider a "Reach"
As an example when Jeff Ireland traded up to pick Dion Jordan #3overall. Or when Chris Grier drafted the kid from Missouri at edge instead of Watts who went to the Steelers 3 picks later

In Laymen's terms it is usually selecting a position of need for a person who should not be drafted that high. Usually bypassing other better players at other positions.

You typically reach when you draft a player for need over talent.

QBs who suck taken in the 1st round are the most obvious examples. Sanders is the most likely culprit this time around.

Richardson's name just popped up on here. Holy **** that was a reach.

Having frequented this site for over 20 years now, I can tell you that the vast majority here at FH use the word “reach” whenever a player is drafted in favor of another player they coveted at that same draft position. Or they otherwise just don’t like or didn’t prefer said player. Over time, the newer, younger members of the forum see the term used ad nauseam then adopt it into their lexicon.

It really is that simple.

The reality is, the NFL draft is an inexact science. 32 GM’s have 32 differing draft boards and 32 different situations/needs. Many players are rated similarly by the majority of scouts and GM’s, but many are not. There can often be variances of a round or two, sometimes more.

But because all the weekend warrior fan GM’s see consistency among the various mock drafts littering the interwebs, they believe they know the range where these players should go and if/when they go higher than they anticipated — it’s wrong and thus a reach.

And those that actually do a ton of research to formulate their own player evaluations think so highly of their own evaluations that they can’t be bothered to consider that other scouts/GM’s have differing ideas regarding the needs and fits for their teams and systems.

Again, it really is that simple.
