What is a "Reach"?

I think we need to define "reach" Im curious what everyone thinks a reach is.

Personally, I dont view a pick as a reach unless it is close to a round too early. Drafting a guy that could have gone 6-8 picks later doesnt really fit that definition to me. Unless you have guys that are clear top 5 picks in the draft staring you in the face and you choose to pick a mid to late round pick over them, I dont see a reach.

Once you pick there will normally be 32 more picks before you pick again, and if you see a guy you like and dont think he will make it to your next pick, I have no problems grabbing that guy.

We throw around the reach word a lot this time of year, so im curious what you all consider a "Reach"
A reach is when a player gets drafted a round or more earlier than your astute professional analysis indicated he should be. Or a round or more earlier than your favorite media draft dude said he should or would be.

Drafting Chop when Quinyon Mitchell is available.
Or Igbinoghene when Jonathan Taylor is available
Or Eichenberg when Creed Humphrey is there
Chop was not a reach. He went in the range he was expected to go by nearly everyone. Just because you think the pick should have been Mitchell does not make Chop a reach.

Still a reach, Mitchell and Thomas Jr are better players.

It would be more accurate to compare them at the end of their rookie contracts. To declare any one of them is absolutely the best after just their rookie seasons is laughable at best.

I hope so, but as of right now, Chop was a bit of a reach. Not by much but at least 2 picks to early, as of today.

He's so damn small, that's why i wasn't crazy about the pick, hopefully he gets better.
He's 6'3 and 250. TJ Watt is listed as 6'4 and 252. Chop is not "so damn small." You're making up crap to rationalize your bias.

So far, Chop isnt close. You don't pass up a DB who makes the NFLs top 101 PFF graded players or a WR that comes in the top 3 in ypg as a rookie for an undersized edge who's good at getting "pressures"

They are currently different tiers of players, Chop would need to become at 15 sack/year guy to catch them.

I just think that any pick you make that is one or more rounds from expectations is a reach. Iggy was anywhere from second to fifth round in the mainstream media. And we went first. I don't recall a single person saying that was a good pick.

I just think a reach is when every other team laughs at you. They could all be wrong, but they still laugh. A seventh round pick is never a reach. A first round pick expected to go in the third is a reach.
On the morning of the draft, it was reported to not be surprised if Noah goes higher than most are expecting him to go. High 2nd was a real possibility they said. So, late 1st is close. The most painful thing is the players Grier passed on to take him. Jon Taylor, Antoine Winfield, Kyle Dugger, Xavier McKinney, Tee Higgins, etc.
