I know this is probably in the wrong forum but this is the only one I read and I'd like the responses to be from the ones that post here. So here goes, I have read some really great posts from you guys that have a great ability (from a my layman's perspective) to articulate what you actually look for when you review recorded games, etc. That got me curious as to where did you pick up this knowledge: playing at the HS/College/Pro level, coaching of any kind, way too much spare time used on studying technique, wikipedia :D, etc?

I'll start off with mine: I don't know $hi# but I love the game. I lived in a one horse town in upstate NY and lived two towns from my HS so even if I had any talent I couldnt play football because my parents couldn't afford it and also couldn't pick me up from practice, etc because they were working. So other than backyard football with the kids that actually played football for our HS I didn't get much exposure. That said, since coming to Alabama in 1991 and being indoctrinated in SEC football I have learned alot more. I can recognize most defensive schemes (unlike most of our recent QBs) and get the basic techniques of most of the positions.

But I am usually amazed at some of your posts were you describe technique down to bending of the knees, kicking out, etc ... which is great because I'm always looking to learn a little more, so thanks and keep it coming. I grew up watching the Giants and the Dolphins (my uncle lived near Miami) and now also follow Auburn and Alabama ... I don't have the inscribed hatred for one of the two teams that most ppl around here have.

Sorry for the novel, I'm just trying to post more like JCane wants :D

Watch and listen to as much football as possible. Watch those WAC games on at midnight Saturday's, watch Conference USA games. Watch any and all kinds of football. Watch as much NFL as you can watch. Just watch watch watch all levels of football as much as you can. For me that is how I learned the game beyond the basics and the deep in's and out's. Also a great book which would be a shortcut to just watching everything over the next 5-7 years is,.....

Great book to get you more "in depth" into what is actually going on in games on the field beyond the obvious.

The answer is obvious, play MADDEN. Anyone in the know, knows that Madden is much more realistic that anything these "wanna be" players in the NFL can do. Madden is REAL football, the NFL is just "make-believe". I mean these idiots in the NFL won't even go for every 4th and 10 from their own 20, real Madden ballers have the courage to do such wise things.

Dude, I hate to admit it, but playing Madden and being good, can be an educational experience of Xs and Os of the game if anything (for the layman)- where it visualizes / simulates all the, timing, intricacies, and strategic value in the range of plays and formations. Also the overall game strategy employed in a game; breaking football down basically like a pseudo chess IMO.

'Course, watching the same team over decades can be a great teacher of the game too.

GO FINS!

As you noticed I was joking, but I do agree Madden can teach you certain parts of football. It is a great tool to teach HS players to understand basic concepts.

Haha, nods I had to read your post a second time then saw you were joking! (not entirely here atm / exhausted)

You are so right on. 4th and 10, fake put roll out pass (sub the qb in for kicker) :D

You've come to the right place. I played at the high school level and have been a fan forever it seems.

Just check out the posts here daily and jump in on a subject you are interested in.

Take it from me you'll learn fast. These guys don't miss a trick. GO FINS

Two referrals for the book ... I'll check it out. I may have misled you with the purpose of this post ... I mainly wanted to know where each of you gained your current knowledge as a way of learning something about each of you.

Like ck: i get the impression that he is a scout or similar. Would like to know how he arrived there, that kind of thing. Thx
