Yeah, Ronnie was the surest and safest pick. But everyone wanted that so-called "sexy pick". I, for one, think he will dominate in our new style of offense.
Good post here...I said the same thing the other day in a post...The draftniks and most of us fans wanted to see Saban trade down and get 14 picks on day one instead of just the ones we had.
No really sexy names like Smith, Caddy, Williams, Edwards...just a regular guy like Brown who is accused by many as not being able to beat out Caddy as the starter...the simple answer to that is that if I am the coach of Auburn, with those two guys...I do the same thing that Tommy did and utilize each to their strengths...they'd soften the defenses up with Caddy for 10-12 carries, then put in Brown to beat the DL down to a pulp...Makes perfect sense to me. Doesn't bother me in the least that he wasn't the "starter"...seems to me he did pretty good as the "closer".
With the number of holes we have had this offseason to fill, Saban has done a masterful job filling. Some will be temporary guys (1 or 2 years), others, like Brown will be staples for years to come.
I admire Saban for not going after a QB, even tho that position is certainly unsettled. Getting a QB as our top pick would have appeased the "Feeley Haters Of America" club, but would it have been the best thing for our team in the long run, based on the quality of the guys that were available ?? The answer is no. Getting an Edwards or Williams would certainly have made the O more glitzier, but clearly the biggest missing piece was a solid RB to take the pressure off the QB, WRs, and OL. If you can move the ball a little on the ground, you can get your WRs open once in a while, the OL starts to feel better about itself and gains confidence, and QBs don't have to be running around the backfield dodging every D player the oppposition has to offer on every play.
So, not only was it a sure and safe pick, it was the smartest pick for this team, this year. My hat's off to Saban...
