MIA has 5 FAs:
Yeremiah Bell, Andre Goodman, Renaldo Hill, Vernon Carey, and Channing Crowder.
*Yeremiah Bell is the one FA that "will" undoubted be re-signed. There isn't an upgrade out there in the FA market, nor where we draft available. Bell will be our starting SS in 2009.
*Andre Goodman being re-signed depends on which DB: out of CB Dunte Robinson or FS Otogwe... Parcells feels he has a better chance to sign. If Parcells feels that he has a better chance at signing FS Otogwe, then they will re-sign Goodman to start at CB opposite Will Allen. But if Parcells thinks that he has a better chance at signing CB Dunte Robinson, then they will let Goodman go and re-sign Renaldo Hill to come back and start at FS opposite Yeremiah Bell.
*Renaldo Hill though still probably is re-signed either way, if they sign FS Otogwe or Robinson. Why? Because I think that Hill will be fairly inexpensive to re-sign...and can still be either our starting FS (as Hill was 3rd on the team in tackles and 2nd in INTS) with an upgrade at CB, or as our top backup S behind an upgraded FS in STL's Otogwe.
Won't even both with Asohgmadawhatever from OAK, as that boy isn't going anywhere and he should/will be the focal point of the Raiders "D" as they continue to improve their team.
*Vernon Carey being re-signed will depend on whether or not CAR franchise tags Jordan Gross, which I doubt they will do, having drafted Jeff Otah last April, likely to eventually replace Gross at LT. Jordan Gross is an upgrade over Carey. So if Parcells feels he has a chance at signing Jordan Gross and pursues him the same way that he did Justin Smiley last year...then Gross wil be our starting RT in 2009. But if CAR re-signs or tags Gross, Carey will be re-signed or franchise tagged by Parcells and be our starting RT in 2009. Simple as that.
Even if they decided to draft an OT to groom at RT, you still would need to franchise tag Vernon Carey in the same way that CAR did Gross last year until our rookie is ready. Remember, we aren't picking #1 overall like we did with Jake Long. So there will not be a Jake Long available where we pick at this year.
*Crowder gave us a clue about what Parcells has in mind about the MLB position by stating, ".....they can easily and more inexpensively replace me (upgrade over me:D) with a rookie being drafted that can take over at MLB..."
A faster, harder hitting, big play MLB should be around at any of the two 2nd round picks we have. So we can use the draft to upgrade over Crowder.
A lot of people here are vouching for us using the #25 pick on a C like Alex Mack. Hmm? Not sure that Parcells wants to give up a chance at Joey Porter's OLB compliment and eventual replacement for a C, when there should be a veteran like Matt Birk available via FA.
If Parcells "does" decide on Birk, then he can use Al Johnson as the backup C....and use a late 2nd round pick or a 3rd rounder on a C/G to either solidify competition for Thomas, provide an injury blanket for Smiley, and eventually be groomed behind Pro Bowl C Matt Birk. So I think Parcells passes on Alex Mack.
Even if Parcells feels that a good OLB will be available at pick #44....he can always entertain using that #25 pick as trade bait for #1 WR AQuoine Boldin, who would be a perfect #1 receiver for Chad Pennington and highlight Pennington's strength.
I also think that Parcells will be paying attention to what type of tender ARI puts on NT Gabe Watson, who is a RFA this offseason.
So we can predict that MLB will be one of MIA's targets in the first day of the draft. Also, an OLB and a G/C to compete with Donald Thomas. I also think that an OT in the second day due to the fact that we have no backup OTs.
Rumors are out that Parcells is thinking about using a 4th round pick on QB Pat White. Maybe if we get a compensatory pick, he uses that on White?
I expect an offseason close to what I put forth...
