What to do with McMichael?

In the first 3 games, we've seen Randy McMichael underutilitzed as a receiver. Some of the reason might be that he is often kept in on blocking assignments. However, I think the coaching staff needs to adjust McMichael's responsiblities or he needs to be better coached for one-on-one blocking assignments. McMichael often gets beat on the outside by either a defensive end that overpowers him, or a blitzing linebacker that runs around him. Right now, McMichael is a liability when he's kept in for protection purposes.

Can anyone out there with coaching experience venture a guess as to how we solve this problem? More two tight end sets?

i think with the blitzing we've seen we could use some spread formations... have mcmike split wide with chambers, booker and welker... and if they blitz pep has to find the open man... but we've been way to vanilla with our passing game lately and we haven't utilized ways to beat the blitzes...

I for one am done with his dropped passes and missed blocks and wife beating. I'll be glad when Saban replaces him.

i'm sick of this guy. he's a pro-bowler on paper but on the field he leaves a WHOLE lot to be desired. if he didn't drop that pass right before culpepper threw that horrible pick against the bills we may have scored a td on that drive. it's little things like that, that are killing the dolphins. and i still can't get that taunting penalty at buffalo out of my head or that fumble against the pats last year or the arrests...this guy is a joke!!!

I think its gonna take time for him and Cpep to get on the same page, though he has dropped some passes and culpepper has not been 100% accurate at times. The bottomline with McMike, which I felt for a long time, is he's overated. Doesn't mean he can't be a good player, just not at the level of a Tony Gonzalez. I should actually clarify, I think we as fans have overated mcmichael.

i have never been his biggest fan. he hasnt done anything for us this season

Let him get adjusted.. He has not had to take this sort of role in Miami.. He's a bit fatigued when he runs his routes(i've seen this happen with many tight ends in the league), and culpepper has overthrown him on like every pass i've seen throw his way.. i'm aware he's dropped 2-3 passes so far.. BUT, he will get better throughout the season.. I don't think he's overrated either, i know what he's capable of, he just needs to start clicking on Offense.. That sort of clicking will happen when our offense starts running on all cylinders.. and by the way, in the open field, as far as Miami's concerned i'd rather have McMichael over anyone on the team, well maybe not over Ronnie.. c'mon chill guys.. :rolleyes2

Ditto, he isn't as good as advertised.

Yeah, he looks lost out there at times. He whiffs big time on blocks, and misses what seem like very catchable passes, then he whines about not getting enough balls.

Remember last year, there were a couple of very untimely fumbles that cost us two games.

When the camera focuses on him & you can see his face he's always got this lost, tired expression on. Maybe he's hung over...:shakeno:

Wow, the solution for everyone-- the O line, Culpepper, the secondary, and now McMichael-- is "we need to give them time."

Well, they don't have the time. The season started three weeks ago. By the time these guys get ready to play this season it will be-- for all intents and purposes-- over.

So, what's your solution week 4 into the season?

Why do I need to offer a solution? I'm not his coach and I don't work for the team. That's for Saban (who's paid millions for his knowledge and coaching skill) and his staff to figure out, along with the rest of the problems that plague this team.

But just saying, "oh, he just needs more time" ignores the fact that by the time he-- and the others-- get it together we may be, like last year (and the three years before that), on the outside looking in. Not to mention there's no guarantee that his play will be any better in say six weeks. At this point, it's only wishful thinking.

Because you are knocking the general solution around these parts, and the one of the coach. For you to claim it is wrong, you theoretically should be able to communicate why and give some sort of alternatives.

Give him time isn't a solution. It's wishful thinking, hoping that he improves as the season progresses.

It's nobody's job on this board to come up with solutions. Nobody here is an NFL coach, much less a coach on the Dolphins' staff. If McMichael or any other player isn't executing, it's the coaching staff's job to fix it-- hopefully before we lose any more division games and conference games and this season is a waste.

As for knocking the "general solution around these parts": considering the general solution to every problem mentioned on this board is "give it time," "we'll get better," or the ever popular "so and so just needs time to learn the system because it's so complex," the solution should be knocked and the coaches criticized for not having the team ready to go in Week 1, not Week 10.
