During Miami’s first drive of Thursday night’s preseason contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Dolphins deployed three, yes, three tight ends at the same time. Gesicki, Smythe, 26-year old Nick O’Leary were all lined up together. They moved around the formation as well, taking turns blocking, playing out wide, and taking snaps in the slot. It appears the Dolphins are hoping to keep defenses guessing by moving around the team’s group of talented tight ends in order to find favorable matchups, something both head coach Brian Flores and offensive coordinator Chad O’Shea are familiar with given their background with he New England Patriots.

Gesicki (6’6”, 245 lbs), Smythe (6’6” 253 lbs), and O’Leary (6’3”, 252 lbs) are all currently listed as co-starters on the depth chart, and each brings a unique skillset to the lineup, Gesicki, who was a prolific pass catcher with Penn State during his collegiate career, provides the best vertical threat of the three, while Smythe is a very proficient blocker. O’Leary doesn’t stick out with any one skill, but he is capable of playing a jack-of-all-trades role and is a reliable pass catcher when called upon. He’s also pretty tough to take down.

Going to be interesting. Seems like Gesicki is coming around. I like O'Leary as I agree with the breakdown on him.

Cut day is going to be interesting for sure at several positions and TE is one of them. I believe those 3 are in and it'll come down to do we keep 3 or 4

None of them are very good. Need a big upgrade after this season.
I respectfully disagree brother. I think they have there offerings, and in the past may have not been used correctly. I think this coaching staff will use them to there given skill set, and maximize the unit as a whole. If you are looking for that one All pro on the team, I agree with you. Let's see what happens with Gesicki this year. Here is to a better 2019 brother! May it be fun to watch again.

I think Smythe will be the best of the bunch in a couple of years. He'll never be a downhill threat but have reliable hands near the line of scrimmage and provide excellent blocking. He's still a young tight end, his role is just different from the explosive one people are hoping for from MG.

Cut Allen, go with Gesicki, O’Leary and Smythe

Dwayne Allen is currently behind Clive Walford on the depth chart, but with Miami having signed Allen to a two-year, $6,000,000 contract with almost half of the first year’s salary guaranteed, I think the 29-year old veteran is more likely to be kept around if the team decides to retain four tight ends. From the article.

I think we have the worst te group in the league. Needs a talent infusion next year.

Smythe is easily the best (most comprehensive) "package."

As this staff is obviously doing with other players -- if they can unleash the best

in Gesicki -- we might have something. I've dogged the kid a bit but he's also a

certified HARD WORKER -- and in the NFL many times that's the difference...

O'Leary just finds a way to be productive. He's a base football player.

I'm disappointed we don't have one above average starting caliber tight end despite using a 2nd round pick on the position in 2018.

We don't really know what we have because we never use the position! Smythe and Gesicki should be deployed more frequently, as they produce the most variety in base sets. You can go double TE or use Gesicki in the slot, we should have done that so much more last year.

Another difficult position to solve. It takes a pretty extraordinary athlete + base football player
to be a stud TE. Historically Miami ain't got one. Just serviceable types. Heck even when we brought
Jackson in he wasn't a monster... They seem to wilt in the SFL heat...

Mcmichael was almost the one ...
