I like most of you did not see the wildcat as a "gimmick" it was a formation that was pulled out a handful of times a game to make opposing teams to work extra during the week.

But what was its purpose?

I think it was used to give teams an extra wrinkle to worry about so our base offensive packages could get more time together to gel and build a rapport. Since Penny came in so late in the preseason we needed extra time to work on our base formations while other teams are devoting time to the wildcat.

So what do you guys think its purpose was?

I think it was one of many offensive formations utilized to give the Dolphins the best chance to win every week.

I think in large part we can thank Wilford for the wildcat.

The fact that we don't have 3 good WR's was impeding our ability to consistantly run the ball.

It allows us to have one blocker for every defensive player and get better blocking & better runs. All of the gadget plays that they run from that formation are great but really I think it was about getting better blocking for Ronnie & Ricky...

I believe our passing game kind of stagnated and our run game was not going as expected. Teams were putting 9 in the box. Brown was able to get the ball a full second quicker than he did via handoff which forced teams to close the hole quicker.

When Williams took it to the outside it hurt the defense more because they no longer could bring in 9 tight on the line.

What teams failed to realize is that it didnt matter ronnie was hitting the hole quicker OR the threat of Williams taking it to the outside. We still really couldnt run block to save our lives.

Spark the Offense...

Short Yardage Pickups...

Makes Defense Prepare For More Than Just The Basic Offensive Package...

Funny you should note this, I was going to bring up at some point that I've noticed that Chad is very slow at getting the ball to Ronnie on the hand-offs, the defense reacts straight away and at least one defensive player is in the backfield by the time Ronnie has possession of the ball. I spose it helps for when Chad sells those really exaggerated play action passes but still. Anyone else notice this or am i just crazy?

The way I understood it was it was implimented as part of our game plan in the preseason when they thought McCown was going to be our QB. He supposedly is a decent handed reciever and Ronnie and Ricky both can throw passes somewhat accurately. In order to overcome our defiecency at the QB postion we implimented it into our playbook since we had the talent to pull it off and a coach very familiar with its intriquicies of it. When Chad got here it got put on hold because he needed time to learn the plays but once he got caught up it was a play formation available to us, so we tried it out. I dont think they were saving it special for NE, they just happened to be the team we were playing when we were ready to experiment with it. It worked out probally much better expected to everyones surprise within our coaching staff that we have kept it going. I think if we see it starting to become ineffective it will go away and pulled only on the rarest of occasions but for the moment it is working so well we are begining to see the copycat phenomina take effect. It is a solid formation if you have the right type of talent to run it and it creates great missmatches on the field when your in the huddle and you see certain defensive packages calld on the field.

oh yeah to answer the original question is its purpose is to move the football in a positive direction and to win us games

To Win The Game...

IMO, it was more of a way to make the defense not put 8-9 people in the box. I think that it made the defense think a little bit and when players are busy thinking, they aren't reacting. I know, I've been there before.

Also because when RB has more time, he can knife through the defense more. It seems to me that when we run it we don't block by assignment but zone blocking. With zone blocking, there tends to be multiple holes that open up and close throughout the progression of the play so Ronnie can fin them and hit them as he sees them.

Have you guys noticed that Ronnie isn't running low as much as he used to. It always looks like he is running straight up until he finds someone he wants to lay out.
