first off let me start out by saying this team is improved and we had a good draft. I did see alot of things today that are disappointing tho. Unfortunately they start with the coaching staff and quite frankly that sucks moving forward. I guess the bottom line is we do have a rookie head coach and it shows. I'm sure he'll get better.
First the mistakes the coaches made:
1. Patrick Cobbs CANNOT play running back. The guy is terrible. He may be a fantastic special teams player, he may be a very intelligent player. It doesnt matter. He cannot run the ball, he cannot pass protect and he is not a legitimate target for a quarterback to throw to. For this coaching staff to make him the third down back is a JOKE. Ronnie Brown should be the third down back and get additional carries as Rickys backup. For this team to have two backs like these, Patrick Cobbs should never see the field. Brown is a great target with good hands, and did you see Ricky's catch? Cobbs killed our first drive of the game with a drop, and it cost us momentum. HUGE MISTAKE by the staff, and one that should have been OBVIOUS coming in.
2. Clock management - didn't we see this movie last year? Well again same ****. Should have called a timeout prior to the two minute warning, and when timeouts WERE called on two seperate occasion...there was no urgency to get them called. In other words the players should have known as soon as THIS play is over we are calling a timeout...yet the clock continues to tick for at least 5 seconds AFTER the time a timeout should have been called. Don't know if this one cost us the game but even still, no EXCUSES for this ****. Cause this is something THE COACHING staff has control over.
3. Inactives. London just came in this week and he is playing special teams yet Wilford is inactive?????? WTF. If Wilford is going to remain on the roster then ACTIVATE HIM. the guy is 6'4....and if you are going to call a ****ing fade to BESS at the end of the game....that is a complete ******** call anyways, but Wilford should at least be available in these situations. Number one and this one DID cost us the game.
4. Tedd Ginn. I like the guy, think he will be a player. But there are some things he is and some things he IS NOT. That being the case USE HIM THE WAY HE NEEDS TO BE USED for ***** sake!!! It's kind of obvious at this point Ginn is NOT PHYSICAL ENOUGH, and he NEVER WILL BE. This being the case, its going to be very difficult for him ever to develop into a true number one receiver. Doesnt mean he cant put up big numbers. But use the guy right!!! Give him every touch you can. The guy should be returning EVERY punt AND kick. PERIOD. I don't care if he is the best receiver on the team right now (not saying much). He needs to be used now, like he would be used in the future on a team that is actually good. Return punts and kicks, allow him to stretch the field and reverses. That being said Ginn's talents cant be fully utilized until Henne or Beck steps on the field, cause Penny simply doesnt have the ability to kill teams deep. This hurts Ginn, but its not his fault.
As far as the players:
1. Brandon Fields. When the hell is this guy going to become consistant? I don't care if he HAS a big leg. At this point in his career HE SUCKS. And he HAS SUCKED since his junior year in college. I've never seen a punter shank more kicks in my life than this guy.
2. Andre Goodman. Thanks buddy. He probably contributed the most one player can contribute to the loss. Please explain WHY THE F you are looking in the backfield when you are already THIRTY YARDS DOWNFIELD?????? YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEEP ZONE ON THE SIDELINE IDIOT. He said he thought he saw something??? What exactly can you possably see when you are 30 yards away from the play? Even if you did see it can you do anything about it? NO...cover your f'n man! I thought the pass interference call on him was a poor call or at least ticky tack. Seemed like they were just hand fighting...and initiated just as much by the offense, however....there was too much space between him and the receiver when it happened and the official saw contact. prevented us from getting off the field. Two of the three biggest plays of the game are his fault. The guy is not a starting corner in this league and isnt big enough either. Michael Lehan cannot get healthy fast enough.
3. Renaldo Hill, Jason Allen. Please explain to me how 5-6 defensive backs cant cover 3 wide receivers near the goal line? Favre had more hangtime than a punt and we couldnt knock the ball down at least??? How does a guy get THAT WIDE OPEN with a ball like that? Well for one thing Hill thought is was a smart play to go cover another receiver deeper in the end zone that was ALREADY double covered. BRILLIANT genius. wonder what his wonderlic was..a 5 perhaps? Jason Allen could have reacted as well and of course didnt.
4. Run defense, and Pass rush. have to go back and look, but overall the Jets ran the ball effectively TOO frequently. Not sure why. It seemed to me Ferguson ok and made some really big plays in the game...but something broke down here. In additon, we did get to Favre, but when we didnt he had WAY too much time. ON those plays we didnt get ANY push at all. So very inconsistent there.
The crazy thing is the injury to Nugent probably ended up costing the dolphins the game. His inabilty to kick actually gave the Jets MORE points as well as a HUGE momentum killer for the Dolphins.
The Dolphins should have won this game. The mistakes that were made clearly cost us this football game. It's hard to say we are a better team than the Jets tho in many ways I think we are. Better teams don't make the mistakes we did.
The Jets made a good move by acquiring Favre. He clearly makes a huge difference on that team. He is the reason they won. He wouldnt be the mentor to the young Qbs we have the way Pennington will be, but I wonder now if perhaps we shouldnt have aquired the guy for as little as the Jets gave up. For all the things Pennington brings, you can see how he limits an offense, and no I know why the Jets made the moves they did.
Calvin Pace would have been a nice addition for us, and might have made a difference in this game had he been in white instead of green. The Jets have better defensive backs as well. And they played a great game.
Also, Jake did get called for a hold, but it was on a mistake that Smiley made. And the trip he got called for was a veteran savy move even tho he got caught...I was actually impressed by the "mistakes" he made.
All in all disappointing loss. The team lost a very winable game. The divsion is all of a sudden up for grabs tho. So lets hope they improve!!
