This is a young man who's been playing the qb position for only four years, folks! Now what that means is that he is yet to develop the " quarterback instinct". This is what 'real' qbs develop from playing the position from jv to high school to college and then the pros. These are not basics instincts but natural and are nonetheless very important assets to a quarterback. It is what makes you avoid not a sack in the end zone or when in the field goal range. It is what makes you step up to avoid would be sack. Finally, it is what makes you a leader and wants to win when the game is on the line. And that's the big difference between a great athlete and a qb. Look I really like Tannehill, I think he is the best qb we've had in Miami since Dan Marino but he is not a natural qb and he needs time to develop the " quaterback instinct".

False.

He was a QB in high school. He voluntarily offered his services as a WR when Texas A&M was ravaged by injuries his freshman year. This is not the WR-converted-to-QB project that people keep trying to make it.

Except that instincts aren't learned.

Any behavior is instinctive if it is performed without being based upon prior experience (that is, in the absence of learning), and is therefore an expression of innate biological factors. .

I grabbed this quickly off of Wikipedia, but you can find the same definition in any of a million different places.

That's why I never was willing to crown Henne, Tannehill, or any of the other QBs we've brought in since Marino....I just don't see the innate instincts. Another poster put up this link to Bill Walsh's take on QBs (actually all the positions if you want to look those up) here: http://www.sportsxchange.com/DS97/walsh/walsh2qb.htm

The part that applies here the most:
To become a great quarterback, there must be instincts and intuition. This is the area that can be the difference between a very solid quarterback and a great quarterback. This isn't an area you can do much with as a coach. You can certainly bring a quarterback up to a competitive standard, but to reach greatness the quarterback must possess that inherently, ala Billy Kilmer, Sonny Jurgensen, Ken Stabler and Warren Moon.

Actually "engimatics" tannehill was first a cornerback in highschool then he was a quarterback senior year. Switched back to WR then QB. He wasnt a QB since pop warner. He played different positions mainly QB. He is still a raw QB in the league
