About a week or so ago I made a post about what Miami should do in the draft, and with all of the changes after the combine and pro days I have made some changes to my board. I think that all of the talk about teams trading up will benefit us in that teams are going to over-pay to get either Calvin Johnson, Thomas, Russell or Quinn, and the value of our pick is going to go up for teams that will see a player of need drop out of the top 8. Currently the 1st round looks like a 4 man race at the top with Russell, Quinn, Johnson, and Thomas, and picks 5-8 are going to be used on players like Gaines Adams, Okoye, Branch, Jamal Anderson, Levi Brown, Carriker, Adrian Peterson... A couple of these players are going to be available at #9 and teams that only need a RB, DT, or DE to make a playoff run will give up a 2nd or a 3rd to move up 5-6 spots.

My thinking is that there is not going to be any one player available at #9 that will be of huge need that we cannot get a similar player by moving back 4-6 spots, and with that extra 2nd or 3rd rounder we could package the 2nd for Welker along with the pick for moving down to get another pick later in the 1st round. Say we move down to 13 to the Rams who really need help at DT, and pick up their 3rd round pick according to the draft table this would give us the #13 pick, the #40, the #60, the #71, and the #82 picks on the
1st day. With these picks I would go one of two directions:

Scenario 1

Take the BPA at #13 from Landry, Willis, Ginn, Meachem, Posulszny, or Levi Brown or trade down for another 2nd or 3rd round pick. Personally I would move down a few more spots and taken Blaylock the massive OT/OG from Texas who is almost a lock Pro Bowl guard for the next 10+ years to solidify our o-line.

Package a 2nd and 3rd round pick to move back into the late 1st round and take Kalil the center from USC if he is there or go with the best WR left out of Ginn, Meachem, Jarrett, or Sidney Rice. My preference would be Kalil since 1-2 WR's will drop out of the 1st round.

2nd round - take the BPA out of Rice, Meachem, Harrell the DT from Tennessee, Stanton or Kolb at QB

3rd round - go with either McCauley or Wright at DB, or one of the DT's that drops out of the 1st two rounds.

Like all Dolphin fans I want the exciting sexy picks to liven up the team, but the reality is that we need to come out of this draft with some help on the o-line, 1-2 WR's, a young QB to groom, and a CB to add to the rotation. Taking Blaylock and Kalil in the 1st would mean that our running game would be even more dominant for Ronnie to run behind, and getting a young QB like Stanton or Kolb to play in 1-2 years would be a smart move as well.

Scenario 2

Take the BPA available at #9 from the above list OR trade down in the 1st round late and pick up a late 1st this year/early 2nd (top 4-5 picks) and a 1st round pick next year from one of the teams drafting in the 1st 5 picks this year. This would give us (3) #2's of which we could package a 2nd and
3rd to move back into the late 1st round, and with these picks we could still get a combination of Blaylock, Kalil, Meachem, Bowe, Ginn.... The key thing in getting the #1 next year is that there will be some very good QB's in Brohm, Brennan, and Henne coming out, and we would still get the players we want this year with the ability to trade up to the first 5 picks next year. Also, if you look at the players that will be at the top of the 2008 draft there are potential franchise players at LT (Long from Michigan, QB in Brohm, RB in McFadden...) and if we get a #1 from the Raiders, Browns, Lions or TB the pick will most assuredly be a top 5 next year. While some might not agree thinking ahead to the next year and getting high picks for moving down a little is a very good move if you know what you are looking for.

Don't take my word for it - here is just one of several mock drafts on the web that is very accurate with their analysis of Blaylock - you be the judge.

"As far as guards go, it is tough to draw up a better specimen than Justin Blalock. He is a very good athlete for an interior lineman, and is very good in pass protection. He can adjust to a defenders moves, and keep his quarterback clean. In the running game, he has the power and strength to drive players off the ball and open up major running lanes. Blalock may also bring the versatility to play at guard or right tackle in the NFL.

Even though Blalock has played tackle his entire career at Texas, he seems to be a better fit inside at the next level. He is only listed at 6'4, so he is short for a tackle, but his height is not a concern inside.

Justin Blalock may be able to play right tackle in the NFL, but he has the look of a dominant guard prospect. He has the talent to be a pro bowler inside at guard, and most teams will draft him with that idea in mind."

I thought about it and I figured what about a first day and 4th round draft like this : (9) S, Laron Landry, (40) C, Ryan Kalil, (60) OT, Tony Ugoh, (71) RB, Lorenzo Booker, (104) WR, John Higgins. Landry as the first pick since he is probably the most probable BPA at number 9 choice (not to mention the type of player that could very well take our defense to the next level on his own) and then go offense for the next 4 as most of the need for bodies exist on the offensive side (not to mention this draft seems deep at the other positions of need on the defensive side like DE/LB) and its been forever that we've had a draft which primarily addressed this side of the ball.

daniel - if we do not move down I like the way your draft plays out, and either Landry or Okoye would be a good pick at #9 - Okoye is interesting simply because he is only 19 years old and will be much bigger and stronger than he already is in 2-3 years - at the age when he should be draft eligible. I like the Kalil pick, and why we did not trade down last year and take Mangold and pick up an extra pick is beyond me. Allen could be a decent pick up in time, but if we had taken Mangold we would have solidified our center position for the next 8-10 years versus still needing help there.

I like those picks quite a bit actually. I don't know about the booker selection, since ricky will probably be back and that would at least buy us a years time to draft another RB. I really hope to land laron in the first if we don't trade down.

I really like okoye's upside... but I would want him at DT not DE.
Either him or roth would have to move to DT because taylor isn't retired yet, and all three of them need to be playing if we were to get all three of them.

Landry over Okoye for me because if we drafted Okoye, the only place he might be able to make an impact this year would probably be at DE until there is some clearing or clarification at DT. Landry we could just place all over the secondary and he could be lethal, not to mention we do have openings all over the secondary too :/.

Also the reason why I chose Booker was because he is one of those everything backs which brings a lot of versatility to an offense (think of an extremely poor mans version of reggie bush :p). Plus even if we get back Ricky, we still have the 3rd string position to fill and he could take over the reigns for Ricky once he is gone next year.
