What worries me is if they get too stubborn about budging on Yeremiah Bell's contract demands...and allow him to test the market...

....can NE possibly get into a potential bait a player from a division rival game? I mean, isn't Rodney Harrison old and could they be waiting for us to slip to prounce on Yeremiah Bell as a potential replacement for Harrison?

This worries me. I hope they get things squared away during the Combines. Don't want to get played like that...

What worries me is the front office throwing away money to people like Wilford,Lehan,McCown,Torbor,Davis, and Anderson.

Also besides the Pennington and Starks signing, I would give the front office a D grade for the rest of the signings.I beleive Sparano and the coaching staff had more to do with the turnaround then Parcells and Ireland.

Yes a lot of the signings last year were really bad.
But, last year the team was completely desperate. It was an absolute complete overhaul of the roster. Dice needed to be rolled. Not to mention we did hit HUGE on Smiley, Penny and Bess.

To be honest at least huge contracts (to "Busts") only went out to Wilford and Torbor. And Wilford's was heavily front loaded, in a year that we were still 20mil under the cap. Actually is a bigger hit to cut him then keep him around in 09.

So while yes, they definately whiffed on FA signings last year, I have more confidence this year. Last year was a sprint to sign a lot new players onto the team, this year is more of a distance race. We have the luxury to sign who is truly the best fit, and draft the rest of the way.

I don't think they are cheap I think they are smart. I think our previous coaches really screwed things up and left us a mess. BP and Jeff Ireland are trying to get this team into a position where we aren't desperate and out of position to bid on players they really want. Don't forget, Jeff Ireland already screwed up with Ernest Wilford paying him wayyyy more than he was worth. Besides, in 2010 there will be no cap, I'm not 100% sure how that's gonna work, but I'll bet they do.

IMO there will definately be a cap.

I would say the season would be cancelled (PLEASE NO!), before it was to go on without the the owners agreement.

Owners would not let this happen because once you uncap one season, players would never agree to go back to a "capped" salary.

I think they just use the rouse of a uncapped season for leverage in talks, and the speeding up of the process.

I think that last year they signed bodies that they thought might have potential given the chance to be the starter. Because of the high turnover of the roster, IMHO some chances were taken and monies spent just to fill holes with the potential to find the diamond in the rough. Most of those didn't pan out.

So you dont like Justin Smiley?

Besides Pennington and Starks? What about Bell, Bess and Smiley?

Smiley played good when he played, but what good is he on IR?Two years in a row now being on IR.

Bess was more like a late round draft steal.

And Bell was a low risk resigning. Now its time for the front office to resign him.

My point is they have to do better job at signing veteran free agents. They got real lucky when the Jets dumped Chad for Farve. What would've been the record without Chad?

Smiley was still a good signing despite his stint on the IR.

Bess was still a free agent signing no matter how you want to spin it.

Bell was not a low risk resigning because of his injury history. They could have easily let him walk last year because of that concern.

I too would like for every free agent signed to pan out but that is not always the case. It also showed that the talent level on the 2007 team was not as bad as the record showed.

What would the record had been without Chad? Noone really knows but it probably wouldn't be what it was. The offense would have been drastically different that's for sure.

One thing is these guys are still better than who they replaced from the year before and as long as we keep improving the talent every year we'll be competitive team every year. Not all signings can be a hit but the idea behind all the signings was to replace the losing atmosphere from the last regime and that was obviousily accomplished. The FO will turnover another 3rd of the roster and if they get 4/5 more good hits and 2/3 solid draft picks then were way ahead of the game.

I like what they have done. When you look at the whole enchilada we really improved and became a team that people had to worry about. You are never going to hit on all player pick ups, but honestly i trust them whole heartedly. I mean what kind of fan could whine about 11-5 and beating out the jets for division title IN THE LAST GAME? Really i mean tell me.....how can you not trust these guys?

Maybe there will be a Cap, but this FO has to prepare as if there won't be and I don't know what the ramifications of money owed will be. I don't really know how that transition will work. I do know that has to effect their decisions right now.

I agree it won't be good for the game if we go to a capless format again, for one the economy better be strong if the NFL does this and I know there's been talk about the Rookies contracts having limits. I can't see how the NFL survives if we don't have a cap, there will be few teams with the capital to survive much less compete. However we can't rule it out at this point.

Two seasons in a row on IR and three surgeries on the same shoulder in two seasons. What is there to like? I get why the team overpaid for Smiley and a lot of the other crap that came in last offseason. The team had to do it considering the record that the team had. I agree with what some others have said, Pennington and Starks were probably our two best FA signings last offseason, especially Penny.
