First and foremost...I am not defending Rick Spielman. But so many people have ridiculed him for the Gordon, Feeley pickups...I thought it would be a good idea to see what many of you monday morning GM's would have done, given the circumstances Spielman had last year. So..let er rip. We'll take a look at the scenarios presented and decide which would have succeeded and which would only have worked in Madden. Remember to back any answer up with evidence...dont just say..I would have traded for Peyton Manning cuz hez da bomb.

I would personally rule the world. But then again, that's just me.

why is it so important? Rick is gone, nobody cares! He will never step foot in the Davie complex again. What's in the past is just that.

Wow..missing the point here..obviously a bad thread on my part. This has nothing really to do with Speilman or our current GM..I just wanted to hear some thoughts as to what each would have done. There are many budding GM's among us...so there might have been some good thoughts. It certainly wasnt a thread to defend Speilman. So...oh well. File this one in the circular file.

yeah everyone ******* about the feeley deal, but i could only imagine the massive amounts of bitching that would have occured if Spielman wouldn't have brought in any QB to compete with fielder last offseason... he would have gotten killed by the fans and the media, at least he went out and got a young guy with potential he was hoping would improve our QB situation for years rather than getting a washed up garcia or brunell... yeah it backfired in the end, but he had to make a move, if we went another year with just fiedler forget about it, miami fans would have went crazy...

Why does every thread on here have to be deemed.."Important". Its not really...important. And if its not so important..why do people keep saying...Wanny this and Rick that. Its easy to blast people if you arent expected to defend your own thoughts.

Well, I for one never liked or thought Feeley would be good, I was against it from day one. I was willing to give him his chance this year and he blew it! I had no problem with the Gordon or Ogon trades.

Well, GM lost a Billion dollars in the First Quarter of 2005 and eventhough their employee discount for everyone program led to record sales in the second quarter, they still lost $387 Million dollars during that period...

If I was GM I would stop building so many huge gas guzzling, F@ck You mobiles and start concentrating on smaller, more reliable and efficient cars that the public is beginning to demand in this energy conscious era.

Glad you asked.

No, I understand where you're coming from. Clearly, RS made some horrible decisions, but he really was backed into a corner on many of them. Clearly overpaid for Feeley and Gordon, but what options did he have? Not defending the choices he made, just putting into context.

I'd like to think I'd have held firm and not given more than a 3rd for AJ, held the Wale trade for Booker and their RB (forgot his name), not got hoodwinked for our 4th to move up and take Carey, who many had as a 2nd rounder. Oh, and not fired a complete O-line and try to rebuild from scratch.

But in reality, the line was going to suck anyway, AJ would still have sucked and Chicago's RB would've done just as poorly. We were pretty doomed last year between the horrible coaching and RW defection.

Perhaps a better way to phrase it would be, what do you think Saban would have done in the same situation? I think the best that could've been done was to ride out a bad year while trying to conserve draft picks. Pretty hard to do when you know you'll be gone if you have that bad year!

Great answer!! This is the train of thought I was looking for. I think one Qb we could have targeted was Kelly Holcomb. He has lit it up at times. Feeley was being groomed as trade bait...maybe didnt need to pay 2nd round prices for him. I think Speilman panicked here. Actually I would have kept Griese..I think he still has some potential...more than what we have.

Wally was a tough one. He was our biggest trade card..and holding out for Booker and A train seem like a logical decision. I thought Gordon would be really good..so at first I was happy we got him for a third. Hindsight 20/20 that deal kinda sucks but backed into a corner what do you do.

he could have brought in kurt warner to get sent into retirement behind out line!!!

the simple fact is that if Spielman did a little legwork, he could've gotten a much better QB than Feeley, especially if other teams were aware that he was willing to give up a 2.

He obviously did little research when it came to AJ. He had played in a WCO his entire life, he didn't know anything else. Norv was running a downfield vertical attack, something so different, even though Wanny had handcuffed him.

If he had called around, there is no doubt in my mind that he could've picked up somebody else. I'll toss out a few names:

David Garrard-with Leftwich firmly entrenched as the starter, Del Rio would've taken that 2nd in an instant.

Billy Volek-yes, that Volek. Before he blew up last season, throwing for mountains of yards in relief of McNair, he too would've been available.

Mike McMahon-was the backup in Detroit, with no chance of regaining the starting position with Joey there. They let him go this offseason without an offer. Would they have accepted that 2, oh yes.

All 3 of these QBs would've been a better choice than AJ. They all have arms, 2 of them are great scramblers, and they were all backups that really had no chance of starting unless there was a severe injury.
