After drafting Allen, I figured we'd start him at safety alongside Bell and have the best 2 from W.Allen, Poole, and Daniels as starting CBs. But now that Saban says he wants to try Allen at CB, which makes a lot of sense, who will be where opening day? If Allen sticks at CB, do you think Saban tries Daniels at S?

Yes. You want your best 4 guys on the field at all time. Theres no point having Bell and Hill start at S with Daniels on the bench if we feel Daniels is the better player.

Right now I see Allen and Allen at CB, Poole playing the nickel, and Daniels and Hill at S.

imagine having Allen, Allen, Hill, Cooper, Daniels, Poole all in at once.....on like 3rd and long. try passing against THAT.

Is he the better player at S though? I feel like he might be, because I liked what I saw from him at corner last year. I'm hoping he's capable, but we'd be talking about having a guy learn 2 different positions in his 2nd year. He's got the LSU experience which must help greatly but I still wonder.

I think Bell will be on the field opening day...

I see Allen playing at free safety. They need more help at saftey than cornerback right now. He would plug a hole there.

Well, Allen is faster than Daniels is and both guys have played both positions and lest we forget, in Saban's scheme, the four DBs are almost interchangeable. There are a few guys (even FAs) that we've have signed that won't make the squad....gonna be interesting...

LCB will allen
FS jason allen
SS deeke cooper or bell
RCB poole or daniels

Yea I see the same thing except Cooper instead of Hill with Daniels.

exactly...

I don't see a real distinction between FS/SS in our defense.....and I really don't see what I would call a protypical SS on our roster......so I just list them all as Safety's.

My best guess is this:

CB
Will Allen -Starter
Will Poole – Starter
Travis Daniels
Reynaldo Hill
Andre Goodman
Shidonya Mitchell (I’m hoping he can make the 53 man roster)

SAFETY
Jason Allen - Starter
Yeremiah Bell - Starter
Travarius Tillman
Deke Cooper
Reynaldo Hill

Left out (maybe some on practice squad)??
Art Thomas
Jack Hunt
Norman LeJeune
Sideeq Shabazz

I think Saban will do a lot of 4 man roataion with them durning the pre-season. If that works, why not use it in a game and keep QB's guessing as to where the tighest coverage is.

bell is the man!
At being injured..... Agreed. I loved Bell as a S. He has good speed, good coverage skills, and good size you look for in a safety. However the guy is ALWAYS hurt. If he could have stayed healthy, he would have been a good finesse cover safety for us.

This is the point that everyone misses. We want the best 4 DBs on the field at once. Your best DBs generally should be your CBs. They should be the best in coverage, the best to react to the ball, and good tacklers. We dont have a FS and a SS like normal teams.

Hence why I posted my original prediction with the Allen's playing CB, and Daniels and Hill playing the S position. Im banking on Yeremiah Bell being injured and Hill slightly beating out Deke Cooper with Poole playing the nickel CB.
