I've been watching games from last season and really trying to break him down but I'll be the first to admit I'm no expert. When I watch him I see all the tools and all the potential in the world. What makes him special in your eyes? Aside from the deep ball what other qualities would you like to see him develop and what do you think his ceiling is?

Philbin has three evaluation categories: decision making, accuracy, and playmaking. I categorize deep ball under accuracy. That's been lacking at times but I dont see it as an important issue.
I think he needs to make strides in decision making. He makes quick, safe, preset throws at times when other options for more yards are available. If he improves that he will be a nightmare for defenses and become truly elite.
As for playmaking, he is capped by his physical tools, it is what it is and it is good.

Ceiling?

Outside of pocket management, I would like to see him extend plays more ala Romo, Rodgers, Wilson. Although, I don't think he has the foot quickness to ever achieve the elite levels of those three.

I like Tanne a lot, he has got better each year. The only thing he is missing right now IMHO is the pocket presence the great ones have. The ability to feel unseen pressure and slide a couple of steps in the pocket to find space to reset and throw. Marino was a master at this. He was as slow as they come 40 time, but he had the quickest 3 steps in any direction I have ever seen. I don't know if you are just born with this or if it can be developed with experience, but as much as I like Tanne he doesn't have that aspect in his game yet.

Never say "ever"?

Romo and Wilson are by no means "elite.". As a matter of fact, I'd be disappointed if Tannehill never at least reached the level Romo has now taken all these years to achieve.

He played WR in the SEC, his foot quickness should be just fine. I think it's more a mental issue than physical, so far he just hasn't seen the opportunity to take off quick enough.

He'll get there though.

Ceiling....top 5 perennial Pro-Bowler...

I guess it's part of pocket mgmt but specifically, he needs to develop that sixth sense of when his blindside is being compromised. Marino and the other "greats" had it. They'd take a well-timed step and get rid of the ball. Ryan takes too many sacks that a more perceptive and elite QB would avoid. I'm also hoping he gets his downfield accuracy up this year. We've seen some good growth in that area during preseason and OTAs.

I think if the catch efficiency would have been there on some (not all) of the deep incompletions to Wallace and Hartline (and I used to be a Hartline fan but he did drop too many), I don't think you would be as concerned about this.

I'm not rehashing the Wallace debate. I'm also not saying anything about Hartline. But the most frustrating fact about many of the "drops" these 2 WRs had were the passes they dropped that were "bread basket" passes or so well placed in their hands they simply didn't catch it. The obvious drops. The inexcusable drops. And Clay and Gibson had their bonehead moments as well. I recall Clay dropping a very important Touchdown thrown right into his gut.

I think Stills, Parker, a more polished Matthews and the salty Jennings will quickly show Tannehill's placement and timing are better than most and there was a fair amount of skewed statistics that led to premature and incorrect assessments.

Simply completing the obvious drops would have changed this discussion and impression.

Kids got tools. He's great.
