OK, I realize this perspective is assinine in that getting a wild card spot, or sneaking into the playoffs is always a plus and doesn't hurt.
But really what would it do for this team but just inflate the expectations for yet another offseason. There is just one ultimate goal in the long run, be a top competitive team or nothing else.
Let's look at the Bucs, made the first round of the playoffs, made some progress, but where are they today? An early exit from the playoffs means little if anything at all the way I see it if your not really a great team heading in. And let's face it, even if this team snuck in, they would certainly not be a strong team, they'd be a fortunate one who strived the second half of a season (unless they pulled a 2001 Patriots or 2005 Steelers, which just is not likely at all).
So wild card spot or not, at the end of the day this is still a team that has holes and many problem that need to be addressed and improved upon in the offseason.
Of course Joey could end up being our best quarterback since Marino and we could not lose another game all season, I wish.
I'm pretty sure I'm not making much sense, so let me try to simplify my point.
Going 7-9 or 8-8 and missing the playoffs means just as much as going 10-6, sneaking into a wild card spot and losing in the first round when it all comes down to it. In both cases the 2006 Miami Dolphins are a team with problems.
So why worry about the playoffs at this point? Let's just take it one game at a time and see if this team can leanr and improve into the top-tier team we all hope to see them be perhaps even as early as next year.
A clouded rambling of thoughts, but I think something to ponder, or at least something to lessen the sting of not meeting the mammoth expectations the offseason instilled in some of us.
