149-90-1 record and 2 Superbowl appearances, how many have we been a part of in the last 20 years? don't worry I'll wait, the league has changed in the last 10-15 years it is now a passing league and cowher and his guys are smart football guys they will understand that, look at Pittsburgh right now they have turned into a passing team with wallace and brown, they understand it's not a run the football play good defense NFL anymore, when he was coaching his style worked because it was a running league he didn't need an elite qb, you could maul a WR and no penalty would be called, now all these rules protect receivers and and let QB's put up record numbers, believe me Cowher and his guys would understand that and build this team accordingly, I would rather have him and his guys come in here than have Ireland's dysfunctional BS!
see heres the thing tho. football hasnt changed. its ALWAYS been a pass first league. coaches just didnt GET IT. this run first thing has been handed down forever and coaches just believed that to be gospel. its only a pass first league now because they FINALLY GET IT. but they all dont. i promise u that. san fransisco was so good under walsh because of the way their passing game setup the run and made the running plays productive on a play by play basis.
u want to run the ball still. but uve got to be productive when u do. even a "run first" coach like norv turner is has to get there through the threat of the pass. u cant run the ball into 8 man lines like weve tried to do in the past. its just not going to work over time.
there is no way to know how cowher thinks about offense, but id be willing to bet he doesnt think much differently then he did. and if he doesnt - i just dont want to see it. and yes cowher had a fantastic record. but he truthfully was in essentially the worst division in football for year after year. they didnt have anybody to go through to make it to the playoffs ever thats how bad the other teams were...bengals? browns? they have both always been terrible for over 20 years. pittsburghs season didnt even start till the playoffs did, that poor divison set them up for better playoffs seeds, more home games in the playoffs, and yet he only got it done 1 time after years and years of no success. why? he was content with bubby brister, neil odonnell, kordell stewart at quarterback. because he thinks like sparano used to. he thinks like wanny. pittsburgh was handed a silver spoon for years and never got it done.
so im concerned. im concerned what type of offensive approach we would have with cowher. im skeptical he would get it right.
