It was a Monday night game back in 2004. The jets cleaned our clocks that night. Everyone talked about the Jets great running game after the game. But damn near 90% of that came in the second half. The first half of that game is where we lost. I remember thinking I was watching Joe Montana again. (God I hated that man, but he was good.) Our defense was great. A top 5 defense with JT, Zack, Madison and Surtain. All in their prime and there was nothing we could do to stop Pennington. He was dinking and dunking like Joe Montana did once upon a time. Rarely throwing the ball further than 5-10 yards down field and making us pay every time he did. The second half came and the Dolphins sold out in stopping the passing game. The Jets ran for 200 yards and Pennington’s performance was lost on most.

Last year I watched Pennington hoping to see him play at that level again. At times he got close but the Fins didn’t have what Chad had then. An Oline that could protect him and get a yard or two when everyone knew they were going to run the ball. Montana had it way back when and if we can get the same out of our oline this year you guys who never saw Joe Montana play will get to see this closest QB the NFL has had since.

If our oline can reach that level of play we are going to go a long, long way with Pennington as the QB this year…

I do not know about him been like joe montana but, he was signed right after the first pre season game last year. He already had a year to get in sync with the receivers. He is going to be much better this time around.

Joe Montana? Are you serious? How many games did Montana miss, how many Super Bowls did he win? Ya, Pennington reminds me of Marino too, they are both QB's. Pennington is the most accurate QB in history, and he is a good leader, other than that he should not even be mentioned in the same sentense as Montana, Marino, Elway, Unitas, or even Favre, Brady, or Manning. I love what Penny did for us last year, but the guy has been pretty fragile up to last year.

The Montana description first came during Pennington days at Marshall. Short arm, highly accurate, great field presence, etc.

Why in the heck would any OC think his offense could make a living via the long ball with Pennington at QB is beyond me. Even his "long passes" at Marshall were more of the 15-20 crossing patterns that a certain gazelle just outran everybody.

Give Pennington a couple of big 6'3" WR's and a OC that not afraid of working horizontally, then look out.

Chil out Dude, I was talking about one half of one game. Not a career....

No, dude, I have no vested interest in getting in the middle of this, but... I've heard more sensible things by flaky new-agers at the local pot dispensary....(no offense?)

Recently on NFLN, they had a game Elway vs Montana, KC vs DEN. And there was absolutely NO comparison between the two. Montana was making throws at the age of 30+ and the downside of his career, that Penny still can't make or ever made.
And Elway in the game showed why he was one of the best ever. He had such a live arm it was amazing how spoiled you can become watching Marino, Elway and even Montana back in the day.

That gazelle also went deep a lot.
Pennington is one of the reasons he is so good in the jump ball situation.

Do you even remember that 2004 Dolphins team? That was the second worse Dolphins team since the league merger in 1970. Ricky quit on the team just before training camp. Wannstedt was thinking about quiting as well before he finally did after the bye week. Our "great" defense began showing it's age with Surtain being the only player you mentioned that was under 30 years old.

If Pennington's performance reminded you of Montana after that game, then more power to you.

Joe Montana. Chad Pennington. I want everyone to just say those names.

If you can really say those names and put them even in the same sentance, well.....I don't know. Good on you. I just can't really talk to you about football though.

This.

I got the chance to watch a Marino game.......I was flabbergasted at his arm. The ball was a rocket. And at pinpoint. That is an imposition of will.

Chad Pennington will never be as good as Joe Montana. Does that count?
