Just wondering,
considering how good this "rebuilding" year was, what everyone thinks is needed to get to the next level.
I still think the QB is a key element but where else should Saban focus this off season?
Looking back at 2005 it appears there are less holes to fill than I originally thought.

O line, the one we have now has improved 100% over last year, but we need an O line that is mean and aggressive.

Secondary, we need two more key players in the secondary. Hopefully a safety and a corner. Between the draft and free agency both of those could happen.

D line, and LB couldn't hurt, these are the oldest units on the team. I'd like to see us pick up a big NT.

QB in the draft, Gus has another year left in him and he can groom the new kid
Secondary either draft or free agency
OLine either drat or free agency
WR again draft or free agency. Maybe we could get RandelEl. Hes a free agent this year....

I agree that secondary help is a must, the only 2 I see returning
in that group are Bell and Schulters. A healthy Will Poole for 2006
will be a plus.

randle el sucks...

If we can get booker to restructure he'd be a good 2nd, I think he's a really good 2nd reciever when healthy, he just isn't thrown to as often so he doesn't look as good as he is.

With a record over .500(yeah, I believe they'll beat NE) their draft position
will make it tough to land a good young QB with such a limited group of talent coming out.
Maybe another shot at Patrick Ramsey would do the trick.

Well of course a QB or project is a must have.

I believe we need a playmaking safety. Saban has shown to love to Blitz his safeties and a big, fast guy at that position can make those safety blitz's so much more effective, I'm partial to Darnell Bing through the draft. But someone with a size/speed combo and who is an effective blitzer is a must have and I see Saban liking someone in the Troy Polemalu(sp?) mold.

We need to add depth at CB. Hopefully if Madison returns, he and Daniels can remain starters and I'd be fine with that. If Poole and Mitchell can rebound from injuries we might end up just fine in the secondary depth wise and for the future, but a FA or young guy should be brought in as insurance. If Saban fills confident with the CB's we have a young free safety would be a nice option to groom behind shulters and fill in in multiple DB packages.

Offensive line could use a few more guys to make this a dominate group. Carey should settle himself in at RT by next year, Hadnot at C or RG. Now I see Jeno James as a guy we should look to get a young guy in their, because his fat contract might be expendable considering his performance dosn't warrent it. LT should also be something to look at, we don't know if Alabi is ready or ever will be and i'd rather see the team play it safe at that position.

WR we could use a late round pick on a speedy slot guy that can return kicks. Marty and Chris are a very solid duo and should be together and effective for the next few years barring any cap problems. I like Wes and his sure hands on punt returns but on kickoffs a guy that is a legit threat everytime he touches the ball would really give our ST a boost. Skylar Green would fit the bill.

Besides that, I'd look to aquire projects along the d-line at at linebacker, because although our front 7 is playing very solid they are not the youngest or cheapest group overall and we could definatly afford to have more guys like Roth and Wright working their way into the rotation.

This season was great! However there are needs to be addressed. Everyone is going to look at the QB situation right away and say we need to draft a QB or get a big name QB via free agency or trade (Culpepper, Rivers, Carr, McNair, etc.) Thing is, its really a catch 22. If we draft a QB and want to start him, our record will probably be worse next year as its going to be a rough season for whomever. If we sign an older veteran QB, we're really making the decision, hey, we're really close this is the difference maker. We'll only have him for a few years with more than likely a large contract. Then we're just going for a few years with another "caretaker" rather than the future. I think the best thing is to keep Gus, hopefully he has a lights out year next year, or something comparable to this years good Sundays with him at the helm, and draft our "future Franchise QB". This team needs alot of help as far as depth on the offensive line and the secondary. I think we need a big time Tackle that can anchor the line. I would love to see us sign Hutchinson and/or Bentley. They would be great additions. Also, you're right we do need playmaking safeties in this defensive system, but I think we have them in Tillman and Bell, not to mention with the move of Daniels prolly to safety as well. Signing a big Defensive Back (Clements, etc.) and the draft of another quality DB in the 3rd, 4th round would be great to bookend with Madison and a healthy Will Poole.

We need starting QB, LT, NT, CB and last but not least.... for us to be "done" rebuilding, we need to begin cultivating YOUNG quality depth behind these young stars.

With the exception of a few seasons in the past decade, Miami's starters have always matched up well against our opponents. And, we've always been an above average team.

However, 2 factors have separated us from being great/elite. 1) Good/great LT, QB, (now) NT and (now) CB and 2) depth behind these starters. We've always been one injury away from mediocrity. In order to BECOME ELITE AND SUSTAIN an ELITE TEAM, we need good/great depth. That is why NE has won 3 SBs in 4 years. The ability to overcome injury.

This next draft should allow us to nearly fill our above positional needs with young talent. And, we will once again go looking for cheap vets to fill in the ranks. As will always be the case, but over time, the ratio of cheap vets vs. young talent should start to favor the young talent as each draft yields more quality players.

And, that is the difference between NE and MIA in the past decade. Depth and a slight upgrade in overall talent across the board. And now, we have finally started to right this ship and it will not be long before we will return to Dominance of the East.

oh, i'm sorry... I didn't realize 34 receptions 545 yards and a 1td is lighting it up...marty booker has the same stats (actually a little better) with 4 less game starts...antwaan isn't going to come cheap, he's the best reciever on the market this year after wayne

i'd rather try to restructure booker which i think he'll do IMO (and just my opinion), and draft someone in a late round

Yes, unfortunately it looks like Gus for the next year AGAIN....but I sure wouldn't want him grooming my kid...would you?.....................:)
