The most confusing issue to me regarding our draft is where Vernon Carey will play, where he's best suited to play, and how this will effect our draft. Who we draft (or don't draft), be it JLong, Sam Baker, Anthony Collins, Carl Nicks, Heath Benedict, etc. most likey will be determined, at least in part, by where Parcells & CO. see Carey playing. So what's it going to be?

Left Tackle- doubtful, but what if the JLong detractors are right and he's best suited for RT? Do we keep Carey at LT? Could be, but not my first choice.

Right Tackle- draft JLong, play him at LT and move Carey to RT? Getting warmer.

Guard- Draft JLong AND Sam Baker or Anthony Collins- JLong plays RT, BAker/Collins plays RT, Carey moves to Guard. This is my favorite situation. It goes back to the issue of where is Carey best suited to play, and what is the best lineup for our team.

Likely scenario- We don't draft JLong, draft the best LT candidate at 2A (Baker or Collins, I think) and we're one Guard away from the starting OL lineup being complete. I'm still a Drew Mormino fan, we'll see what he can do.

JMHO, I think that we draft 2 OL in the first 4 rounds. Call it overkill, but if we took 3 that would be ok with me- I keep thinking Heath Benedict in the 4th. With the picks at 2B or 3 I could see us going DB, but with this being the best OT class in a quarter century I say let's go for it. What say you?

Carey is a tackle. And if anyone has actually reviewed his games on tape and not just an alchohol induced gametime view...I think Carey graded out pretty good at the LT position.

It's more likely to start a rookie draft pick at the Right Tackle position...if he can handle it.

Carey at LT.
Mormino & VET battle for starting LG.
Satelle at Center.
Smiley at RG.
Rookie (Collins???) RT w/ Vet backup.

I like this set up except
Jake Long at LT
Mormino LG
Satelle C
Smiley RG
Carey RT

if anything Satele would move to LG and Mormino to C in that scenario. but i don't think BP sees Mormino as a starter, but the backup C.

i look for MIA to select an OT and an OG in two of the first 3 picks. with the other pick used on a QB.

One of the dolphins players has said that Carey is being moved back to RT and their going to get a young guy in the draft to play LT

As much as I like Jake Long, drafting him complicates matters as he would be the second OL (after Carey) with questions about where to play him. In fact, there are even rumblings as to where Satele is best suited to play (Guard, with Mormino taking over at center).

Back to Occam's Razor- the most likely outcome is the most obvious: draft either Sam Baker or Anthony Collins at #32 to play LT and move Carey to RT. End of story, game over. Boomer was all over Collins, and now Draft Tek has Collins going in the 1st round to the Chargers (link below). Baker seems to be a good fit for us at LT.

It doesn't mean that I can't still hope for a 1/2 combo of JLong/Brendan Albert (how good would that be?) or JLong/Cherilius, maybe JLong/Nicks. Nonetheless, drafting Baker or Collins at #32 to man the LT position would probably do the trick, and do it nicely.

Interesting Sam Baker tidbit:

"I remember almost three years ago, after the 2004 football season, Hall of Fame offensive lineman Anthony Munoz said something to the effect that USC’s Sam Baker was the best NFL Prospect that he has ever seen. That year Baker started all of 2004 at left offensive tackle for USC as a redshirt freshman. Fast forward to 2007 and Munoz’s words of wisdom are coming true. While Baker isn’t rated as high as Michigan’s Jake Long on most NFL Draft Boards that I have seen, he is not far behind."

ummmm,i have a question for you, that i'm hoping you can help me understand....why would you take a Tackle and put him at Guard? Careys more natural position is RT,and it's the position he fills the most comfortable at. the fact that he played LT on the line this past season and did good speaks well for him.Jake Long also played both RT&LT during his 4 years at Michigan, and i think will be able to do the same in the NFL wherever he goes(hopefully us). i think he'll be drafted to play that LT position and i think he'll do really good at it once he learns and adjusts to the speed of the NFL,but, this is all just my opinion.

Why? Two reasons:

1) From what I recall Carey played his best football at UM at the Guard position, and some claim that's where he would play his best pro ball.

2) The strength of the OT position in this year's draft. If we can draft a damn good OT in rounds 2 or 3 and take JLong #1 then we could slide Carey to Guard and be set for a decade.

Like I said, however, the easiest solution is probably to move Carey to RT and draft a Sam Baker or Anthony Collins to man LT. No muss, no fuss, and we'd just need a Guard (maybe Drew Mormino).

I was just telling you all what i heard on www.wqam.com they interviewed Jusin Smiley and thats just what he said. He didn't say they were going to draft Long, just that they were going to bring in a young guy to play LT.

As for me i don't care if it's Long or Baker, but i'd never use a 1st overall pick on a LT, but thats just me.

I'm telling you, I'd be very freaking pissed if we took Oline with both our first picks. Football starts up front you say? I agree. But up front includes or Dline as well, which played worse than our Oline last year.

The only questions I would have RE: Baker are the same questions I'd have about his partner Kalil - how mean is he?

Don't get me wrong, the guys at USC are very well schooled in technique and have skills. But, if they won't kill a guy if need be, then who wants one at the most important position on the line?

How can you judge that trait by what school they attended? USC- Ron Yary, Anthony Munoz, Roy Foster, Tony Boselli. Not bad. The Guard in the draft this year from USC, Chilio Rachal, is supposed to be very good, too.
