Let's say that we don't end up drafting a LT in the first round of the draft. Who ends up starting for us next year at LT? Damion Macintosh? Do we have any options in the later rounds of the draft or FA without switching someone from their natural position? Do we try Vernon Carey at LT again?

I think LT is an important decision for us this offseason. It definitely needs to be upgraded but there are a paucity of options that I am aware of out there. Who do you guys think will end up being our LT next year if we do not draft one in the first?

They need to resign D Mac as the LT cause he is the best we have right now. Then I would look to add Levi Brown, Joe Staley or Doug Free in the draft. Then let Houck decide who starts.

GO PHINS~!

Well if they were to draft Levi Brown at #9, I would like to the think he would be the starter at LT in 2007. I wouldn't want them to take an offensive lineman that high and have him not be the starter. That would be like a wasted pick.

Well to get Levi Brown we'd have to draft him in the first which goes against the hypothetical situation I had set out. So lets say we end up getting anyone in the first except Levi Brown or Joe Adams. How do we feel about Joe Staley or Doug Free as you set out? Do they really have the stuff to develop into a starting LT in the league? Neither has really shown that they have the ability to play LT against real competition and to me look like projects a la Anthony Alabi. Now I am not against developing players, but it seems of late the project players we draft never pan out. As far as Damion Macintosh, he may be the best we have at LT, but he's in the bottom third of the league at the position. He might be serviceable at other parts of the OL, but he is no permanent solution at LT.

Sorry must respectfully disagree. We need to find better options than D Mac and there should be. Draft or FA. If we can find the right fit a guy who could eventually start this year and learn fast then great. We need to covet two new players for insurance. Saying he is the best at this position is not much considering that we have a bottom 10 and arguably a bottom 5 OL in the entire league. Yeah IMHO we ARE that bad. Just being a realist here and hate to be pessimist.

LT, RG, C (a true center that is) are all positions we could use help. Its a bad sign when a team has three draft needs on one OL unit. In our situation I would draft best available athelte at any OL position in two of our first three or four picks. If we find some type of option via trade or FA that can negate need for high pick why not try a late round project with a shot at developing sooner than later. We really don't have much too lose by doing this.

I think Levi Brown is a quality prospect at LT, but the whole thing I am asking is if we do not draft him in the first where do we find our tackle?

Incidentally I actually think we are in a good position in this draft. Almost no matter how the draft pans out there should be a player left who can help us out tremendously at a position of need.

Pettigout, the LT for the NYG, was apparently having a good 06 campaign, but was injured half way through. He was just cut last week and is now a FA.
