Signability.

Houston did it right with Mario Williams.

Raider did it wrong with Jamarcus Russell.

So this is what I see from the Phins.

In the next couple weeks you will hear rumors of players being approached and I think it will be a short list of

Long
Long
Gholston
Ryan
maybe Ellis
Maybe Dorsey

I think Parcells will play each against eachtother and eventually one signed in principle prior to becoming the selection.

IMO that is the only way to play the first pick anymore, otherwise you get help hostage and your rookie that needs to be at camp ends up holding out.

Signing ability will be a factor at some point but i still think you need to get the best player and just hope the contract situation works out sooner rather than later. No matter who you pick is a huge investment salary cap wise so you might as well get the better player. With that being said when there are a few guys that grade out evenly signablity could play a factor and if it does imo chris long would be the most signable guy and jake long would be the harder or hardest guy unless ryan is thrown into the mix.

I agree, I think that will be a factor in who they choose. Though if you are implying that the Texans took Williams over Bush because he was easier to sign, you are wrong. The media and fans wanted Bush to go to the Texans, the Texans wanted Williams all along.

The nice thing is that this year there are a few players who could be considered the best overall player. I don't know if the list will include as many people as you said, but I think Jake Long, Chirs Long and Matt Ryan will definitely get talked to about contracts.

If sign ability becomes the over-riding factor then the NFL draft will sink to the level of the MLB draft.

No way will the NFL owners and NFLPA allow that to happen.

I would love it if I saw the following headline tomorrow morning stating-

Miami Dolphins agree to contract terms with Michigan tackle Jake Long

remember if the player holds out wayne says they are not playin that year.

Getting one of these guys signed is alot more on who their agent is than the player themselves. I highly doubt you can offer the same contract to a DL as a QB, if you do the QB would never sign it but then again in this case that would be a good thing.

Why would the NFLPA care that players are signing contracts that are too big, the reason signability is a factor is b/c the size of the contracts, which is a good thing in the eyes of the NFLPA. I don't see the system changing and think that the contracts will continue to rise at the top of the draft as the cap continues to rise.

Assuming the Fins have 3 or 4 guys with very similar grades, I would tend to agree that signability is important. But there's no way you give up talent for a "signable" guy. When you're starting off where the Dolphins are, you can't afford to miss talent just because you're afraid of negotiations. That's the job of the front office, to get these deals done.
