Whose fault is it that you became a Miami Dolphins fan?

If you grew up in Miami, then it’s your parents fault. But for those of us outside the area, it’s not usually that simple.

Maybe your dad liked them, so you wanted to too. Maybe your best friend was a fan, so you followed them too. Maybe you grew up in the early 70’s. Maybe you just liked dolphins as a kid. Maybe you ate a lot a paint chips.

For me, it was Dan Marino. You see, as a rabid WVU fan - Dan Marino led the Pitt Panthers last my Mountaineers EVERY YEAR in the Backyard Brawl, thus ripping the still beating heart out of my chest and spiking it on the ground before running over it with a steamroller.

I decided that whichever team drafted him, would be my new team. I was never going to let that man beat me again.

Um ...

****.

This misery I’ve been dealing with is all Dan Marino’s fault.

I wish I knew how to quit you.

See my family is from Pittsburgh...they are all die hard Steeler fans...growing up all I heard was how amazing Marino was at Pitt...my first big football memory was of Super Bowl 19...

Live in Maine. Dads a huge fan which led to me being one. Moms a Pats fan. I choose the Dolphins at a very young age they told me. I guess one Christmas I told my mom to tell Santa I didn’t want anymore Patriots things.

Great stories. I have always been fascinated with what draws people to become fans of teams from areas they are not located in.

I grew up in Miami and have a blind loyalty to them but if I didnt... i dont know what would draw me to this mediocrity.

From Jersey. Hated every local team that all of the unimaginative kids followed....Mets, Yankees, Giants, Jets. First game I watched intently as a young kid was the Mud Bowl in January 1983. I decided at the beginning of that game that I was a Dolphins fan. No chance I’d pull for the Jets. Just happened to be lucky enough that Dan Marino was drafted a few months later.

Growing up in Denver Elway was king. I could not stand him or the Broncos. Marino in my eyes was always better and that is what made me a Miami fan.

From Toronto. No football fans in the family. Watched the Dolphins randomly get pumped by the Jets on a Monday night in the early 2000s, I was around 12-13 years old.
I would visit my grandparents who would stay in Ft. Lauderdale over the winter. Colour scheme reminded me of Florida and the good memories!

My father.

Upon his return from one of those southeastern Asian tours guys were getting in the late 60s, he inexplicably latched on to this fledgling NFL team from south Florida. Gave him something to do while he healed.

And oh man, did those guys shock the house in the 70s.

Instant addict. Which he passed on to me, and I in turn passed onto my sons.

And I feel bad for them. Dad watched it all, I got hooked in 76, but all my sons have seen is ****. Sadly, they thrive on my tales of yore, and know just about as much of the glory days as I do.

Pathetic. We all deserve so much better.

same as bumpus, didn’t watch dan kill the mounties but loved the fins since dan. tecmo bowl.

I blame my mother, church and the 1972 Miami Dolphins.

When I was 7 I asked my mother why I had to go to Sunday school and my older got to stay home and watch football. She said if I wanted to stay home with my brother the next year I could. It was 1972 and Miami was on TV most weeks as they went undefeated. Fan ever since.

Hmm...was the Dolphins not winning a Super Bowl during the Marino era and has the past 15 years been God punishing me for that decision?
