The Miami Dolphins announced the hiring of linebackers Coach Matt Burke as their new Defensive Coordinator just one day after Vance Joseph jetted off to Denver. The rapidity of this hire points to a wider master plan that brought both Burke and Joseph over from Cincinnati and onto Head Coach Adam Gase’s staff.
Relatively little is known about Burke, yet he is the man tasked with turning around one of the league’s worst defenses. Especially if the Dolphins hope to make the post-season a regular fixture in South Florida.

2017, DC: Part of a master plan

While Burke has never coached a Linebacker who has been elected to the Pro Bowl, he has made effective use of the limited tools at his disposal during his career. Former players and coaches seem to repeatedly praise his knowledge, energy and toughness. Head Coach Adam Gase spoke glowingly of Burke earlier this off-season and hinted at some semblance of a master plan that brought both Bengals LB coach Matt Burke and DBs coach Vance Joseph to Miami:

“I really felt like we had two defensive coordinators on that side of the ball. We were very fortunate to be able to get him. He had plenty of opportunity to go others places and decided to coach linebackers for us when it was critical for our success this past season and for myself, so it was an easy decision for our organization and me to elevate him to this position” – Adam Gase

I think a huge key to the Dolphins success or failure this year is going to be whether Matt Burke is able to turn the Dolphins shoddy defense into a strength.

There isn't much to go on so far. He's definitely one of Jim Schwartz's pupils based on time spend coaching under him and the recommendations made to move Burke up in the coaching ranks.

Is going to be able to make the continuation of this defensive scheme into a workable thing vs scrapping it and putting in something better.

What galls me is when we keep looking at and bringing in players that don't seem to be scheme fits and yet so adamant about keeping it. So much was said about having to run 4-3 because of Suh but I've been feeling Suh could do just fine as a 3-4 end (you don't want to play him as nose).

Yeah, that is non sense. Suh could not only remain as a 3 tech in a 3-4 (and obviously a 4-3 Under) but also have very similar responsibilites as a one gap defender in a scheme like Wade Phillip's uses.

Just hope he is flexible, and puts players in position to succeed schematically.

Yeah that would be a nice start. Otherwise i dont have any reason to be optimistic about this guy yet....just have to trust Gase and probably to lesser degree Grier know what they are doing hiring him. I do like the continuity aspect.

Our defensive talent was putrid in the back seven but the coaching on the defensive side of the ball saved us. So much is said about how much yardage we gave up and yet they consistently tightened up in the red zone and got timely defensive stops and turnovers. They were coached up well last year and with a few better players and continued coaching success we will have a solid unit. Hopefully Burke was actually as important to that side of the ball last year as they are implying because that staff got A LOT out of the little talent they had to work with.

Not excited but I trust Gase enough that if he said that he named his pet fish, Goldie, the D-coordinator I'd just wonder if Goldie was going to be on the sideline or booth.
