Who the hell is Sam Simmons?

Sam Simmons

does anybody know any info on our 170th pick, Sam Simmons WR from Northwestern?

He averaged 16 ypc last year. KR and PR.

Sam Simmons
WR | (5-9, 197, 4.52) | NORTHWESTERN
By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Married and has two children. High school All-American from Kansas and State Player of the Year according to USA Today. Made an impact as a freshman in '98, playing in every game and ranking eighth in the nation in kickoff returns with a 27.6-yard average (22 returns for 607 yards and no scores). Also carried the ball 31 times for 124 yards and one touchdown and had five catches for 132 yards and one TD. In '99, caught 12-261-1, carried 12-65-0 and returned five kickoffs for 131 yard and 11 punts for 169 yards and one TD before a broken collarbone but him on the shelf after seven games. In 2000, caught 35-474-5, when he also returned nine kickoffs for 198 yards and 12 punts for 172 yards. Also rushed 5-47-0. Missed the Purdue game with a stress fracture in his back. Played in every game and started all but one in '01. Had a team-best 50 catches for 807-7 and returned 15 punts for 162 yards and one TD.

Positives: Good athlete with quick feet. Can return kickoffs and punts. Stockier than most receivers and has good balance and body control. Versatile. Can be used as a receiver, returner or third-down back. Can be tough to defend against when he lines up in the slot. Is quick, shifty and nifty.

Negatives: Lacks height and top-end speed. Can be run down from behind. Average route-runner. Can be inconsistent catching the ball at times, and some of his drops come because he looks to run before he secures the ball. Has had some injury problems.

Summary: If he stays healthy, he could make it as a slot receiver and return man or even as a third-down back and return man.

Positives: Has a sudden burst off the ball to gain advantage … Able to make sharp cuts and shows explosive acceleration throughout his routes … Adjusts his body properly on the move and is very conscious of the sidelines … Tough and assertive going for the ball in traffic … Has the arm flexibility to extend for the high passes and the quick reactionary ability to come back for the ball when the quarterback is flushed out … Adjusts and uncovers quickly on crossing routes … Makes a solid effort to crack block up field.
Negatives: Has only lean muscle development … Lack of power prevents him from escaping the bump at the line … Durability is a concern, as he's had his share of bumps and bruises … Needs to improve his frame in the weight room to take the punishment dished out at the next level … Has a stress fracture in his back that continued to give him problems during the 1998-2000 seasons.

He was the kick returner we picked. I knew we would grab one in the draft but I figured it would be with the 7th rounder. Not a bad pick though just because he is very versatile. If we get a receiver hurt, he can play slot receiver. We can also use him as a running back if we needed too. I haven't read this anywhere but it sounds to me like he is similar to Brian Mitchell (I think that's his name, returns kicks used to be QB in college and high school, I think he plays for the Eagles). Not extremely fast but sees the holes open up and is a great returnman. Also drafted in the 5th round (I believe that is also where Mitchell went). Very versatile and kind of stocky for a returnman.

He seems to me like he was born to be a football player. He just seems like seeing the field and feeling where he is at is just very easy for him. I am disappointed somewhat that we didn't grab a guy by the name of Victor Rogers or Joaquin Gonzalez but who knows, they could be left in round 7. Obviously this is a guy ranked really high on our board who could turn out to be the game-breaker style of player we always needed.

Gamebreaker and...
Lacks height and top-end speed. Can be run down from behind.
....does not go together.

I just heard on WQAM they have him slated as the new KICK RETURNER for the PHINS! Chris Chambers will NOT be on the Kickoff receiving team no more!! Thank god!! Remember Jason Sehorn a couple years agao?

Doesn't anybody remember we flew him in for a personal workout before the draft!!! We were lookin at him at his workouts and interviewed him a few times. Not a suprise we picked him, but I would have like Milons instead of Lowe, then pick Lowe(or whoever) instead of Simmons, but that is only me.....

He must have impressed the organization at the workouts. I guess this means Odgen's days as a Dolphin are numbered.

Even though I never saw him play at NorthWestern, I think this is a pretty good pick. He sounds like a versatile threat.

Consummate team player who is a clutch short-area receiver, a dangerous deep threat, a fluid runner on the reverse and an effective return specialist … Three-year starter who will do whatever it takes to win …

Versatility seems important to Dave Wannstedt. Omare Lowe played at all of the secondary positions while at Washington.

This guy sounds like a player. Will do whatever it takes to win, I like that. Kind of like Fiedler. We need more guys with a lot of heart. We have a lot, but it never hurts to add more. InFINsible, just because he lacks top end speed doesn't mean he isn't dangerous. Brian Mitchell is one of the greatest kick-returners of all time but he never had great speed. All you need is to have great vision and the ability to make people miss. He seems to have that. Brock Marion was an alright returner and he was a hell of a lot slower than this guy I think.
