Well take McKnight. He has 3 yrs left as follows:

2003: salary $1.5 million/bonus amortization $360,000/cap hit $1.86 million

2004: salary $1.8 million/bonus amortization $360,000/cap hit $2.16 million

2005: salary $1.9 million/bonus amortization $360,000/cap hit $2.26 million

Restructuring(i.e. converting salary to bonus) would result in a decrease in salary to $655,000(7-9 yr min). $1.5 million-$655,000=$281,666/season

His new cap number would be $655,000 + $360,000 + $281,666=$1,296,666 for a cap savings of $503,334

BUT, $281,666 was added to each of the follwoing 2 seasons and if he were to be released before June 1st, 2004...it adds $563,332 to next years cap for a total dead cap of just over $1.28 million. Is it worth saving $503,000 in 2003 and adding $563,332 to 2004? I would say not, thus this restructuring would be a bad decision.
