We are not in position to trade draft picks for veteran players. We need to rebuild with youth. But at WR, I wouldn't spend a high draft pick on one, this year. If we are to develop a young QB, he needs weapons now, just some guys who are capable of getting open. And rookie WR generally have a hard time contributing. It's just too much for them to learn, from technique to reading defenses so that they can run option routes. That said, I would like to see us sign two of the following free agent WR.
Bryant Johnson, 27 years old, 6'3, 215 lbs. He's been a solid #3 guy, but has been stuck behind Fitzgerald and Boldin. He would jump at a chance to start for someone.
Andre Davis, 29 years, 6'1, 195 lbs, came on late in the season, and is explosive on kick returns.
Ernest Wilford, 29 years old, 6'4, 218 lbs, had a solid ending to the year, including a good game against the Pats in the playoffs.
Justin Gage, 27 years old, 6'4, 212 lbs, another guy who really came on in the 2nd half of the season.
Of those 4, I'd be really happy if we got Johnson and Gage. It shouldn't break the bank to sign either one. There are also some other guys with potential available, like Drew Carter, DJ Hackett, and Devery Henderson. I know that none of these guys are big name players, and none are star caliber. But, this year, after the Chambers trade, we had no legitimate starting caliber players at WR. Most of these free agent guys have been solid #3 type guys with the potential to be #2 guys. For right now, I'd rather see us address our needs on defense, the o-line, and at TE through the early part of the draft. And I think we could land a couple of solid WR with potential in free agency.
