Many of you know that Peterson will be a UFA next offseason. Many of you don't know that Peterson played for Nick Saban at Michigan State.

In Nick's most recent Dolphins Insider column, he was discussing the point production system they use on defense to evaluate players. He said that against the Broncos Zach had 27 production points and JT had 24. Both Zach Thomas and Junior Seau had 20+ production points against the Jets. He says if a guy has over 20 production points, it's a pretty darn good day for him. If he has 30 or more, that's an absolutely phenomenal day. Then he says...

It's hard to remember every game I've coached, but I think Julian Peterson, when I coached him at Michigan State, one time had 33 points. That could be the record

He goes onto explain the system. You get 2 points for a solo tackle, 1 point for an assist. Negative 2 points for a missed tackle. Get 3 points for a forced fumble, 3 points for a recovered fumble, 3 points for an interception, 1 point for a batted down ball, and negative two points for a penalty (JT would have had 28 points against the Broncos then w/o the two offsides).

His philosophy is interesting, btw. He doesn't have a production point system for offense because he says that offense is about the execution of all 11 guys on the field, so you can't quantify it too much. He then spends the rest of the article GUSHING about Junior Seau.

BUT, back to the point. Julian Peterson played Left Outside Linebacker in the 49ers 4-3 scheme last year (as opposed to LILB and RILB...so basically it was the same position as Spragan and Seau have played for us). He made the switch this season to LOLB in the 3-4, which Spragan and Seau have also been playing.

Seau, especially with the calf injury if it turns out to be serious (and I have a bad feeling...these kinds of lingering injuries with a really old vet can be bad news) could be looking to retire after this year especially if the Phins have some kind of cinderella type year. Junior says he never wants to go out on a bad note. If Miami guts out an impressive season this year Junior may decide to hang it up if injury issues are really bringing him down.

And Peterson was franchise tagged this offseason. I think he might have been franchised last offseason too not sure. They have to keep giving him a 20% raise I believe every successive time they franchise him. God knows that could be a bloated figure so perhaps the 49ers just don't bother franchising him.

IF that is the case, and IF San Fran and Peterson come to some kind of impasse (big IFs) then I am about 90% certain Peterson will be a Dolphin.

And THAT, folks, would be some kind of special front seven. Zach, JT, Peterson, Crowder at LB spots, Carter, Traylor, and Roth or Holliday on DL...maybe Manuel Wright or Kevin Vickerson really surprise us by then who knows.

remember peterson himself is coming off an achilles, which we all know is a major injury. it is intriguing though, with the playmaking potential and athleticism he would bring to the table, how strong is the connection between he and saban..?

peterson is nice but wayyy too much $$.... if we are going to spend big bucks on D, lets get some good DBs...

He's having a pretty good year so far coming off the achilles. I have him on my fantasy team. He's got 12 solo stops, 6 assists, 2.5 sacks and 1 pass defensed through three games.

Saban would pay money for the right player on the front seven. Not so sure he'd pay a ton of money for a guy in the secondary. Remember, he's a secondary coach. He feels he can coach up guys in the secondary to play better than they would normally play elsewhere.

Secondary may = draft picks. I just don't expect Saban to pass up the opportunity to grab an impact linebacker to fill in at an important spot in this defense, especially one who has played and excelled in his system before and whom he knows can make that transition seamlessly right back into this defense.

Well at least we might have a shot at him if we are creative with his contract. You know if Wannestadt was here this would be a completely outrageous suggestion. Miami is building something good here, SF is a lost franchise right now. I would leave if I was him.

if we can fix the secondary, i have no problem spending dough on LB.... its just that secondary better be locked-down then. i'm not against spending dough on LBs, just that i want the money to go where we need it.

we also need OL, QB, and a dominant DT, don't forget. Traylor is awesome, but he's on his last legs...

look at our projected cap situation, its insane. saban is god. players do want to come here. goo dinfo by the way those are good numbers. next years draft imo were looking oline qb db dl lb. weve got the veteran leadership in place, but we do need to get younger and more athletic on defense. dont have much exposure to him though, just the reputation o fbeing a beast

I'm thinkin Rodrique Wright?

:D

But, we DO have Vickerson and Manuel already. Course, we could have both Wrights, because you know, two Wrights Make a Win.

we def need another fat plodding slob to be groomed to take traylors spot. i see wright as more of a penetrating gap shooting disruption type player, if he ever lives up to his potential. we have all seen the impact of traylor on our defense, that is a definite area of need. i wish we had coleman from the falcons. man like a sack a game for them since hes been there

btw, last week someone put up a list of free agents. peterson is the only one that stood out to me.

i bet he'd love to play for saban and maybe even take a few less dollars to be reunited with him...asuming he likes him that is. but how could you not!?

im on the phillip rivers bandwagon. with some improvements to the oline our skill position weapons, the draft of my god i could foam at the mouth thinking about it. i cant wait until randy and saban really get down to business, this season no matter how sweet it is is just a warmup

We'll see how it goes. I believe Miami will be better off drafting at around 15 to 20 than they would be around 1 to 5, so nobody should lament our winning record.

the offense isnt far away, jim bates was right about the defense needing more work. i may be wrong but ithink we have the oldest defense in the league
