An NFL source said Philbin and Clements had talked previously about the possibility of working together if Philbin were to get a head-coaching job, but it’s unclear whether Philbin will indeed take Clements with him.
“To leave Green Bay, it’d be a hard place to leave, because of the situation I’m in personally with the quarterbacks and the situation we’re in with the team,” Clements said last Monday. “We have a young team; we can be good for a number of years. It’s great to be in a winning program. If opportunities arise, you analyze it and see how that would be, and compare it to what you’re involved in and make the appropriate decision.”Philbin is also close with Bennett, who was the Packers director of player development in 2003 when Philbin arrived in Green Bay. The two men have coached together since 2005, when Bennett became the team’s running backs coach. He’s also a Florida native.Bennett moved from coaching running backs to coaching wide receivers this year after veteran wide receivers coach Jimmy Robinson took the same job with the Dallas Cowboys after mulling retirement. The move, which happened in February, was done in part to diversify Bennett’s resume and prepare him for someday being a coordinator. Whether he’s ready to assume such a role this soon is unclear.
