Both received 5 year deals. Veldheer got 35 million and 17 guaranteed. Albert got 46 million and 25 guaranteed. Veldheer is 3 years younger, and doesn't have a potential serious back injury. It just doesn't make sense to me at all. Albert may be a better player in 2014, but for the duration of the contract Veldheer will be the better player. I'm not necessarily knocking the Albert signing, he was a pro bowl tackle who is really good in pass pro. And definitely makes Miami a better football team. I just don't see the rationale of paying someone more who is older and has more injury concerns, when they are pretty evenly matched. Anyone have a reason that make sense?

You are not knocking the signing but you start a thread knocking the signing.

It doesnt matter who we sign people are going to whine. Its the way it is, ive learned to just wait and see.

It filled Miami's biggest need with a quality starter. I'm not opposed to it. I just don't see why it was Albert over Veldheer. Especially when you factor in age, injuries and the fact you are paying Albert mo

I'm confused about why we didn't go after Monroe... Should have at least played Monroe against Albert to try to get him to come down on price.

Right on man. I see a younger guy with more upside as a run blocker and is an elite pass blocker. He's younger and a better athlete. So ya, it doesn't make much sense to me at all, he was my first choice. People will say he had the triceps injury, but tell me this if player X is a 26 year old who had a torn triceps and player Y is a 30 year old with a bad back, who are you more worried about?

I think it's a joke, but I also see a solid pass protector in Albert and that's what we needed, just don't agree with how we went about it.

Like Daytona said Philbin wanted Albert from last year.

I'm happy with Albert, but agree Veldheer was my top choice considering health and contract. Bottom line is it's not a draft. You sign the guys willing to come to your city.

I'm just confused about it. Believe me it could have been a lot worse. We could have gave Saffold 21 million in guaranteed money. I just don't see how both Veldheer and Monroe got less money when they are younger and considered by most to be superior players.

it's a thing called "mutual interest"

it's amazing how so many fans tend to think FA is nothing but a bidding war...as if these players, who by the way are being paid millions of dollars wherever they decide to go, just blindly follow the money. Some are like that, yes, but most people tend to be a bit more complex than that....

Albert and Philbin wanted each other from the get go, so that makes Albert a) motivated to be on our team b) easily attainable c) willing to play hard DESPITE the money rather than just FOR it. If he signed with another team (Oakland or Arizona) maybe he would've demanded the 10-11 mil that we saw rumors of? a,b, and c could have all been opposite for Veldheer.

This is sort of analogous to the Wallace signing, he came here just for the $$, and it's reflected in his attitude and play. Gibson on the other hand, wanted to be here, and it is also reflected in his attitude and play. I love having both those guys, but the point is you can't just act like FA is a real life version of Ebay.

I don't know man....Saffold was a disaster, the Albert signing just scares me about the guys in charge of evaluating talent. It's not awful, but I'm not gonna be a homer about it (not that thinking Albert was the best option makes everyone a homer) but I can't see it after watching games of all of them and doing my research... I see 2 guys in Veldheer and Monroe entering their prime and Albert with a couple good ones left hopefully, but not any years that are better than his last. Rarely get better over the 30 mark.

It's a nice thought....but most players chase money...if we paid Veldheer or Monroe 8-9 they'd come.

For Comparison here are the contracts given to Albert, Monroe, Saffold, and Veldheer

Albert= 5 year/ 46 million. 25 million guaranteed

Monroe= 5 year/ 37.5 million. 19 million guaranteed

Saffold= 5 year/ 42.5 million. 21 million guaranteed

Veldheer= 5 year/ 35 million. 17 million guaranteed

Monroe's and Veldheer's deals were fantastic. The best 2 signings so far besides Denver stealing TJ Ward for 4 year/23 million.
