I posted this in another Zach Wilson thread (there are too many), but I agree wholeheartedly.My belief is that 95% of backups will fail miserably and IDing the successful ones before the fact is practically impossible. Call it blind luck. That being said, I have no problem with Wilson as he does carry upside potential... I'd much rather bet on potential and fail miserably than bet on safe and still fail miserably...
Last year, 16 teams had backup QBs start 1 or more games, 15 teams had 1 QB start every game (not counting rest in week 18 games), and 1 team (Steelers) was unsure of who their starter was. Let's break these teams down.
16 teams who had backup QBs start 1 or more games
70-103 with their starters (41%)
22-65 with their backups (25%)
2 teams with a winning record (11%)
2 teams made the playoffs (3 missed games total)
15 teams who had their QB start every game
160-92 (64%)
12 teams with a winning record (80%)
11 teams made the playoffs (73%)
