I couldn't really remember throwing any quick slants across the middle so I went through the Chad Pennington highlight reels to check if there were any there. They didn't have reels for weeks 2,3,5,13, and 15, and obviously they only had some plays but I kept track of them anyways.

I basically charted any pass where the receiver was cutting from the outside into the middle and was hit in stride.

Week 1 - 1 Pass to Martin
Week 6 - 0 Passes
Week 7 - 1 Pass to Cobbs
Week 8 - 2 Passes both to Ginn
Week 9 - 1 Pass to Ginn
Week 10 - 0 Passes
Week 11 - 1 Pass to Cam
Week 12 - 2 Passes, 1 to Cam and 1 to Bess
Week 14 - 1 Pass to Wilford
Week 16 - 1 Pass to Ginn
Week 17 - 1 Pass to London (wasn't really hit in stride but would have if the pass was a little closer)
Wildcard - 0 Passes

That is 12 passes in 12 weeks.

Obviouslythis is very limited but it just makes me wonder why we didn't throw more quick passes to guys cutting inside. Any ideas?

Because most teams played us up meaning safties creeped up for run support Corners played up more then deep coverage. The Slant has to be a bullet to make sure no OLB or Safety can read and pick 6 it. I don't think Penny believes this is a strength of his and our plays reflect that.

Ginn and Bess both would excel more running more slant routes.

Those are the types of plays that would give us yards after the catch. While I was watching all of the highlight reels, a lot of the catches were to receivers who were sitting in between zones. There were very flew where a receiver was hit in stride. Although, I do have to say our players did a great job getting what yards were available after the catch.

with possession receivers that we have slants are hard to come by. If we had a dominant number one then we could spread it out more, but with 3 slot quick receivers (bess, ginn and camarillo) they dont the strength and body size to get great positioning on the LB's. They out run people or get used in crossing routes. If we had a dominant number one (like a moss, andre johnson or calvin johnson) they would be scared to get beat deep and lay off. Opening up underneath stuff like slants for the more quicker receivers.

We def ned a number one receiver! It will help out this offense so much. And maybe a QB with a strong enough arm to reach him...but thats asking a lot lol

very well said. couldnt say it any better.

Wasn't the pass to ed reed over the middle, oh wait...

3rdandinches hit it on the head. Because our deep passing game is no threat, the opposing safeties were always close to the line of scrimmage, leaving no room for slants. It also doesn't help that we don't have a big, strong WR, except for London, who was used sparingly.

it is hard to throw slants on a 3-4 defense because of that 4th lb. a defense like the ravens you need to spread them out and create space for your wr's and rb's
