Why do people want to cut McCain?

Why do people want to cut Bobby McCain? His play was fine and we are not in cap trouble. If we cut him we’d create another need on defence.
I've never understood it either.

Every coach he has played for praised him. He isnt a perennial pro bowl player, but he is above average, despite his stature, at safety. He was also seen as a top slot cover before that. His one year of substandard play was when he tried to play wide corner.

The worst thing Bobby ever did, from a team standpoint, was accept a stupid, premature contract extension from a moron GM. Can't fault him for that.

Brother I think the question is he providing enough return on the Dolphins investment, or do you look to the draft?

I can see an arguement for cutting IF you have an in house replacement in mind. It does free up 5.7 mil.

To cut him, only to bring in a high $ FA makes less sense. Yes you might get an upgrade physically, but Bobby already knows the system, and any good FA is going to cost a lot more, and have a longer term contract.

Looking at the salaries around the league, you can make a case that McCain is overpaid, but not by anything substantial.

I agree brother.

Meh to him and Rowe. I personally think our secondary lacks bite! Meaning we have no one back there that’s willing to play that enforcer role. We have passive-aggressive guys that would rather push you instead of lightening you up.

People want to cut McCain because he wasn’t a good player years ago and people haven’t changed their minds. But he’s become a better player and leader under Flores and he probably not going anywhere this off-season.
As a rookie, he wasn't very good. How many 5th rd picks are?

Aside from the one year experiment playing wide, he has been a good player. Ppl hold a bad (from the team's perspective) contract against him.

Ah, you mean like Rashad Jones. Yeah, he would lay the wood, when he wasn't blowing assignments, being caught out of position, or just freelancing.

I get wanting an old school, tough guy but the combination of that, and also being top mentally is hard to come by. Some might say elite.

Most teams, even the good ones, have "elite" at maybe 4 or 5 spots, including QB. You have to accept solid somewhere.

I'm not saying Bobby is the best thing since sliced bread, and if a viable alternative upgrade came along, you do it.

I just think there are other places in which to have an immediate focus.

McCain has a cap hit of $7.1 million next year and Rowe has a cap hit of a little over $5 million. They have an in house prospect in Brandon Jones. Jones is younger, faster, and much cheaper than either McCain or Rowe.

If the coaches feel Jones can replace either McCain or Rowe next season, I don’t see them keeping the safety Jones replaces because it doesn’t make sense to pay a backup safety 5-7 million dollars a year.

I have no idea if the coaches are looking at Jones as a starter in 2021 but he was drafted to hopefully develop into a starter eventually. If they don’t think he is ready to take over one of the starting safety position and assuming they don’t draft a safety in the first two rounds or sign a high priced safety in free agency, I believe that would mean McCain and Rowe would be the starting safeties again next season.

Was thinking the same thing. I thought he played really well last year. He and Rowe make a nice safety tandem with Jones giving us some good depth. Our secondary is the one place where I think we're set. I ain't messing with that. Use our draft picks and FA dollars to completely revamp our offensive skill positions and to add high value pieces throughout the rest of the team.
