From what I see, we employ 2 SS in Jones and McDonald. We will be paying them around 16 million next year and neither one of these guys are cover/centerfield guys. What was the front office thinking when signing McDonald?

One thing I feared was McDonald’s lack of range backing up deep coverage. Unfortunately, my concern was well founded.

My only hope is this. I think he can run a bit and may be ok in deep coverage once he understands better and has more experience.

Both of them are a liability in pass coverage........I don't understand us not having a FS either.

McDonald is going to have to put in the work this off season to be better in coverage plain and simple. Jones is way too important for us in the box and he needs to spend most of his time close to the line because no one on this team wants to tackle

Definitely going to need to draft a FS that will be able to play snaps in 2018 and hopefully get all 3 on the field and use Jones as like a S/OLB.

Just my view of it

I've been saying this since day 1. It really doesn't work for us either. Jones is doing his normal thing while McDonald just looks lost trying to play FS.

I could see getting away with both if we had lockdown corners and linebackers who could cover. What we have is 2 SS who are coverage liabilities along with Alonso and Timmons. This needs to change. Those linebackers might look real good in practice covering a geriatric like Thomas but on Sundays they look bad. This team needs a FS and some linebackers who can cover.

One thing that is becoming more consistent with the current FO is the lack of ability to assess personnel. This situation is just another example. It's not a knock on either player but as has already been stated, they both essentially play the same position. Miami needed to pair with Jones a player like Hooker from the last draft. Unfortunately with the money Miami has invested in these 2 safeties I don't see them investing a draft pick in the position in this upcoming draft.

The OL, LB's, punter, safties, TE, and even WR's are all examples of poor evalutions of players and lack of vision on how to build a team. I do like Gase but he's got to get better at building a team. Unfortunately I don't know how much of that responsibility is actually under his influence. He supposedly has control of the roster but how much say does he have in building the roster ... who knows.

It's kind of messed up we do not have a free safety. Louis Delmas had bad knees but when he was on the field our defense was much better. Does anyone know if Derwin James is a free safety?

Normal, intelligent football people: "A free safety who can cover the deep and intermediate range of the field and attack the football in the air is a key component of a good defense."

The Miami Dolphins: "Why not just put 5 linebackers out there?"

I think maybe we let some of the Mets/Browns moneyball people into the front office.

Having a SS and a FS has worked for years and years so why would the Dolphins want to do something that works?
Who would make a DT the highest paid defender in the NFL? That's right, nobody but us
Who would give guarantee money deals to players like Timmons, Kiko, Branch and Jones when they didn't have to? That's right, us.
But some people here love our FO because we found a couple of starters in the late rounds. Go figure

Ozzy rules!!

I still will never understand why they extended McDonald before playing a single meaningful minute for Miami. He’s basically another Reshad Jones. Now he’s harder to move so Miami can get a real a FS. Maybe someone that needs a SS can trade for him even better if they have a FS to spare.

Probably the head scratcher extension of the year. I'm not sure why T-Bum thought there would be a significant offseason market for a strong safety that was suspended for half the year.

Derwin James is a FS and a damn good one. See the evaluations on the draft board.

Personally I trade R. Jones outside the AFC East. People forget TJ was a budding star for the Rams before the ETOH abuse

Great post. I’d put James in serious consideration for our first round pick, along with the GA linebacker. We’ve neglected and/or been incompetent at getting an impact FS out there. The problem is this team has so many needs including a young QB.
