why does Jones play as a 3rd DB?

Why isn't Smith playing as the 2nd back and davis as teh 3rd back?

on that TD pass for the bills Jones was the slot DB and Davis as the 2nd DB. why do we always have davis or smith as the 2nd but not both on at hte same time as a 2nd and 3rd DB?

Jones is horrible in coverage.
 
Jones has played well in the past. He is a good blitzer also. I'm not ready to throw him under the bus when you compare him to some of the coverages others have done this year...
 
Skill set is somewhat different playing on the outside as opposed to the slot. Smith and Davis are both better suited to outside.
 
so then will allen in hte slot would be perfect.
 
Yeah I don't know. I would think the combo of Smith/Allen/Davis in some form would be the best Nickel, but it all depends on the skill sets. I would like to know how Will would do in the strict slot on nickel packages, but he has been a no 1 cb and has played on the outside for many years now.

I would also love to see both smith and davis in there as out 2nd and 3rd CBs, but Jones is a very good blitzer, and if Miami's front 7 had not gotten pressure, I am sure they would have sent Jones.
 
because he's one of Parcells' guys. He's good on the blitz but awful in coverage.
