I know it's trendy for the less informed fan to blame the QB. But the defense hasn't really done their part. They allowed 156 yards on the ground yesterday. Most of which came in the 4th quarter, when their SMART OC knew running out the clock is the best way to win. They never seem to be able to get off the field when they need to. No pass rush to speak of and have no idea how to defend a screen.

They can improve too.

They need more turnovers. Have not had that plus 3 or 4 game this team needs.

I don't think this defense gets a pass. They historically have struggled in big games anyways. That plus a defensive coordinator that doesn't play to the players strengths, much like the offensive coordinator, and you have a bad defense. They aren't a clutch playmaking defensive group

We did have the int this week but when your offense turns it over more than your defense gets turnovers your not winning any games

They don't get a pass but I'd like to get up the the league average in scoring and not turn the ball over and see how they fair before I start killing them. Offense id the bigger problem right now, no doubt.

Our offense is #29 in the league in total yards. The Defense is #13.

You can't pin these loses on the defense. We just don't score enough points.

They can improve but when your offense goes 3 and out, turns the ball over and gives the opposition short fields, and can't sustain drives you're going to wear your defense to a nub. The Pats had really only one sustained drive for a TD without some sort of BS call bailing them out and continuing their drive. The second TD was set up by the fumble, and the 3rd was set up by the Vernon horse bleep call. 2 FG's were set up by horse bleep calls too. Defense, in my opinion, wasn't really the issue. For the most part, save for the Saints game, I think they've done an OK job.

They can't stop the run lately. 3 straight games, Ravens, Bills and Pats and they got gashed on the ground.

Maybe Jared Odrick setting the edge was more vaulable then we thought. Wake has been hurt, Vernon is OK and Shelby is a backup. I also think our LB's suck, Wheeler is lost and I even noticed Ellerbee reacting very slowly on some of those runs. Bad offseason, regroup next year.

Yesterday was their best effort in several games. That's why you don't hear anything. Patterson makes a considerable difference. The intensity level was quite high, which is normal for a division game with the road team coming off a loss. We started the game similar to Buffalo against us a week earlier.

The only player getting a pass is Dion Jordan. I keep reading fanciful posts saying he needs to play more, if not the entire game. I guess nobody wants to actually watch those plays from the 13 yard line into the end zone after Vernon was called for batting. Jordan was brutal, other than the first and goal play when the entire defense stood up to the task. Watch Jordan on those power running plays and you can see why he was a situational player at Oregon and so far with the Dolphins. I think Tyson Clabo could overpower him on running plays.

The defense played well in the first half, but why not in the second? Just like Sherman, Coyle isn't very good at making adjustments. It's their second year with added talent, but both the offense and defense have regressed. This tells me that what the coordinators want to do is not working, so the only choices are to replace most of the players or replace the coordinators (and probably Philbin, too).

They get worn down and they don't respond well to adversity. They have problems defending the screen pass and they don't play up to their (very high) ability.

All that said, the problems with the defense pale in comparison to those with the offense. So, they don't get a pass. It's just on this team they aren't the biggest problem/disappointment right now.

Our offense is scoring almost 22 points a game. The defense is allowing more than 22. That is not a good defense. Very average, not outstanding in any category IMHO.
Wheeler is a down grade from Burnett. Dansby and Ellerbee would have been the best 2 LB's.
Getting rid of Vontae and Smith appears to have been a mistake also. I would have kept Vontae and add Grimes.
Ireland has no vision.

There's a synergy between the offense and the defense. When the offense starts going into the crapper, not sustaining drives and scoring enough points then the defense spends too much time out on the field. They get gassed and exposed. This is not an elite defense by any means.
