Why have we not restructured Marshall or Dansby or Bell or signed big Jake to a long term deal to open cap space? What do they expect to do with 13 mil in cap space? If I am not mistaken we need to save 5 of that for rookies. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I was kind of wondering the same thing. The obvious answer is that at this time, they do not have to. However, I really thought we would restructure a few, and even cut a few prior to the start of FA.

I feel they don't want to do anything unless what ever it is exactly they want to do is set in stone. For instance once they bid and feel they have who ever it will be in their grasp, that will be the time to restructure or release anyone.

How many other teams have done this? The Jets did a bit with their Sanchez contract extension and the Colts cut a few decent players. I don't recall hearing about any other teams doing anything though.

Because you cant just restructure players because you guys say so. They have to agree to it as well, specially if they are productive players with leverage. This isnt madden.

Sorry I really do not have and "real" insight only speculation. However, what I can think of is something like us going after say Reggie Nelson or Eric Winston getting into contract talks to see what they want and getting a feel for the cap space needed then we will cut and restructure.

Because if we sign Winston we can cut how many bum linemen we have like 2 or 3 (Carey/Jerry etc) and actually make our draft pick a great position to get Decastro and make our weak o-line an elite one fast. Same with Nelson if we sign him we already have a young and cheap SS on the roster in Jones whose skill set is far more that of a SS than a FS so you can cut YB and save some coin there. Moves like that are possible where we cut to get players we want in.

And we do not know yet if we will resign certain players and like some have said and others will reiterate since today is the official first day of FA we will prob cut ties with several people to begin to make room.

I've seen CK mention this and I agree with him. This organization seems to have a "deal with it when you need to" attitude towards restructuring. There is no need to restructure yet if they don't have to. If the need arises, then they can go from there.

No it is not madden but it is about managing a football team. When you rrestructure the only thing you are really doing is givin the player more money now to save on the cap. That is how it was explained on the radio. So why would players not want to. Detroit did it with suh and their qb and also big Ben did it Amd many others. But thanks for the helpful comment about madden. Very insightful.

I hope everyone understands that in most instances to re-structure and pay a player upfront bonus money that would normally be paid as regular salary is not a good thing. Teams try to avoid doing this. It can cripple them later.

Thank you for the answer. That is the kind of answer I was looking for. That makes sense then why they did not restructure.

I think the league just came out with the salary cap yesterday so it's hard to restructure when you don't know what the pojected cap is...and from what I was reading it was all over the place, including some rumors of it possibly going down to $115 million from the $120 million it was last year. As it is it stayed virtually the same $120.6 million now. It's also possible, from some rumors I've read, that it may not go up again next year.

Really outside of restucturing Dansby, Marshall and Long there aren't any salaries that can give us significant cap space and I think this staff wants to see how these guys respond to their offense and defense before they commit to them long term with new contracts. Even Long needs a look because he is coming off of an injury and really played below his standards he set his first 3 years. You don't want to give him an "elite" contract if injuries have robbed him of his elite status.

That's just my take.

restructuring is good for the player, bad for the team. the player still gets the same money, just changed to a bonus instead of salary, so they get it earlier. but for the team, the cap hit that was to be for one year, is now split over multiple years.

the 2 instances where restructuring benefits the team is:

1. the player also takes a paycut
2. the player was in the last year of his contract for a large amount, like Jake right now. you add years to his contract, change his 2012 salary to a bonus and thereby spread out the large hit to smaller hits and lock him up longer term.

and cutting players also causes dead money to cost against the cap, which is another negative for the team. look at Indy right now, they cut so many guys they are now showing nearly 37mill in dead money against their cap.
