I've seen a few threads on games in HD the last few weeks, with people often asking - is it worth it? Does it live up to the hype?

I upgraded the week before the Raider game and have been in awe ever since, even if the Dolphins weren't broadcast in HD until yesterday.

It was so enjoyable watching the HD broadcast yesterday - but I noticed something that really makes it worth it, in addition to the outstanding clarity that is reason enough to upgrade if possible.

On the Booker TD, I was able to see Booker break away in the corner well in advance of the ball reaching the end zone. With the wider screen format, you see a lot more of the play. I saw Booker breaking away and got excited as the ball left Gus' hand.

Now, when I saw the highlight when later switching over to the Bills/Jets - a non-HD game - I couldn't see Booker until the very end when the ball was just reaching his hands. If I had watched the game in standard-def, I would never know where the ball was going till the very end.

I can't tell you how many similar plays I've seen like that in Standard-Def over the years and never knew what I was missing. I wish I could post the comparison somewhere on here for all of you to see. I'll never go back!!

So if you have the means and are wondering whether it's worth it next season, I say go for it! It makes watching the games so much more enjoyable as you literally get to see more of the game!

What's sad though...is CBS has probably the worst HD signal out of the nfl broadcasters...if you want to see jaw dropping clarity...watch a ABC game...they have the highest quality cameras....that is drool worthy....

I myself hate the fact that we're on CBS, for that reason...and cause the Jags are forcing themselves on ourselves here in the Central Florida region.

But, this is my first season with the high def screen and man it is a sports fans heaven for the senses. If you're debating whether you should or not....definitely get one...plus movies are much more fun...it's like having your own movie theater

not to mention life size Halo

Try connecting your home theater system to the digital input of your cable box and you'll dolby digital sorround plus that crystal clear picture and its like being there.
I live in Canada lost interest in hockey since they started with high def I've watched every game in the junior world championship.
You can see the puck, it makes all sports more enjoyable.

Agree about the sound, and hockey. HDNet down here shows some games and it makes hockey a much better TV sport. Could help it's overall popularity in the U.S. down the line once more people are on board.

My parents got an HD TV a few years ago. If you get the chance, watch a Super Bowl in HD. Hopefully we'll be seeing the Phins there soon. :dolphins:

To this day my dad will watch anything that's in HD. Even the most boring, mundane stuff (according to my mom). They watch shows about desert sand and the wind. She knocks her into unconsciousness. Meanwhile, my dad remains enthralled.

My mom quips, "A dog could be taking a ****, and he'll watch it if it's HD".

Hidef is the only way to watch any sport and get ready for hidef dvd they are coming in 2006 and they are so much better than what we get now, I'm into high def sound super audio and DVD audio beleive me when I tell you the sound quality improvement is similar to the picture improvement on TV.

I would like to add to all those who are considering jumping onto the Hi Def wagon. Do your home work before you buy!

First go to two or three different stores and ask plenty of questions. Get an education on what is available.

Then! Go to: www.avsfourms.com & www.hometheatrespot.com and spend a few weeks there asking more questions on what you have previously learned from what your EYES told you in the stores and what the sales person told you.

The most important thing you should be looking for is the latest technology with the best reliability.

Oldest & most reliable is: CRT rear projection.

pros: tried and true, properly and professionally calibrated offers best picture quality.

Price! Due to phasing out of technology.

cons: slight chance of phosphor burnin leaving static image of logos and news ticker permenantly imprinted on screen.

If professionally calabrated this almost never happens.

Size. BIG. My 51 inch Hitachi SWX 20b = 250lbs + 24 inches deep.

Not good for gaming because of chance of burnin.

Forget the hype of Plasma for now. Just to expensive plus life span of expensive bulbs and huge burnin issues.

If I were replacing mine, I would choose Samsungs DLP. I've helped five friends research for their HDTVs, plus having a good friend that is a professional calibrator and Samsung seems to be the best at this time according to him.

Anyway...all I trying to convey is when you are spending $1500 - ???? make sure you do it wisely.

We got a 42" Samsung, the TV is excellent. The funny thing is we also have a 55 inch big screen with rear projection, the 42" looks like a bigger picture since it is widescreen for some reason.

Thanks! We did a ton of research before hand, and ended up with the Samsung 40" LCD - the one advertised in the Dan Marino commercials (I saw this after we bought it). We got a rediculous deal on it at Best Buy that is too hard to explain, basically, it was $700 less than the price at Best Buy right now. It also fit JUST inside our Armoir which was a must for the wife. Otherwise, I would have gone 42" Samsung DLP for the price savings and still amazing picture.

But you are right. There is a lot of information out there and you really have to do your homework to get yoru $$ worth. This ain't like the old days ...

It's showing you the wider angle, you are actually seeing more of the picture.

You didn't hurt yourself with the LCD! :D

The differerence is much more than going from black & white to color and color to HD.

I've had mine professionally calibrated and it is like looking at 35mm film. :D

Hey Mole, I heard that after The first 120 hours or so burn in is'nt much of a factor for plasma tv's. True?

If you keep contrast and brightness below 50% and no gaming it should hold true.
