Why is free agency before the draft?

It makes no sense. Use FA to fill the holes after the draft. Stupid
It's because the league year starts so many days after SB and that's when contracts expire. Could they move the drat up? I suppose, although FO will tell you they need time to organize and evaluate the thousands of scouting reports.

It actually does make sense to have it the way it is. You don't see anybody complaining on either side which doesn't happen often.
Its also a way for the NFL to have a 12-month season. SB ends is in Feb, FA in March, draft in late April/early May. Training camp starts in July. Interest all year long.

I’ve always viewed FA as a way to add maybe one high priced free agent, and use the rest to fill glaring holes with decent players. That way, when you get to the draft, you can pick BPA.

For example, you have your biggest need at LB. You sign someone like, say Elandon Roberts. Someone who CAN start, but can also be a rotational player. Once the draft rolls around, having Roberts shouldn’t prevent you from drafting that can’t miss prospect at LB, but if that player is gone, having Roberts allows you to move on to your next need rather than reach for another player who shouldn’t be drafted that high
