Maybe Saban has left a roster spot for one of the final cuts who he is hoping to put on the practice squad. Maybe if, say, Vick or Riggs is approached by another team, he has agreed with them that they will be offered that 53rd spot. If not, they will be put on the PS.

That way, he safeguards the development player that he wants and reduces the risk of losing him to another team.

As it stands, talk of trading Zgonina for Brown still leaves us one man down.

Thoughts?

It's 52 because of leaving a space for a FA running back. The 53rd space would be Sammy Morris, but he's on the suspended/reserve list until his suspension clears.

I'm not quite sure why we didn't leave it at 53 and make a further roster move if and when we sign someone, but maybe Nick has a clear idea of who he's going to get.

With 2 RBs and 1 Fb we are asking this question?....Not knocking you but its clear a free agent RB will be signed today or tomm

We obviously need more help at RB, but why not cut to 53 then release someone alse when we find the FA? There has to be a reason for cutting to 52 now.

I think your second paragraph is correct. Saban will likely not sign someone who hasn't come in for a physical or at least he won't annouce that.

As to why not sign someone and then cut them? perhaps he thinks he can slip someone through waivers in the mass crush instead of sending someone out there alone with a late cut. It is also kinder to the player than to think you have made the team only to be cut a day later.

Since the RB's that Saban is looking at were all just cut for some reason, I wouldn't be surprised if he trades a player and signs another, a total of two RB's as we are so thin, and it may be the last chance to get a decent Rb this season. I like Davenport, but if he could get Chris Brown and Davenport by trading a player, we would have depth and could waive Sammy Morris or Minor. maybe by today we will have some answers.

Why in the world would you waive Minor? 4.1 YPC, solid pass blocker, solid ST's player, young, and never been hurt? This guy never gets the credit he deserves.

Yup!

You nailed it IMHO.

Wouldnt that 53rd player have counted against our cap if we would have had him on the roster and then released him, even if it was a day later?

Probably to trade a draft pick for somebody. This way, we don't have to get rid of other players, just add one.
