Tannehill has spent much of his 3 years in the league playing behind a porous offensive line, which has often caused him to run for his life. He is the most sacked QB of any QB in the league over the last 3 years. Some of the reasons are poor planning and poor execution for far too long and something needs to change.
The fact that Miami hasn’t solved this issue becomes more amazing when you realize that the last two head coaches for the Dolphins were at one time highly respected offensive line coaches who were considered to be in the tops of their fields. Yet here we are.
Maybe there is a bit of ego involved. A belief that they could turn 3rd day draft picks into starters or perhaps they simply felt they could coach up what they had. Whatever the reason it hasn’t worked the way they have planned.

The Dolphins basically have a disaster on their offensive line. These offensive line issues are clearly the worst case of front office mismanagement, and poor coaching we've seen from the Dolphins since 2007.

Another reason and yet the most important one is bad choices or poor selection when it comes to picking or signing players for that position. When Miami signed Brandon Albert last year, he wasn't the best choice available based on age and health issues but he was the one Miami coveted. Ditto for the Juwan James. As a matter of fact, James was considered a reached where he was drafted. In the same year and the same draft Miami reached for another project in the third round by selecting Billy Turner out of North Dakota state. What killed me was the Jamil Dougal's draft. Miami was enamored by Jamil's potential. They said "he can pull, drive and bend." But the knock on him was that he was too "finesse" and weak on the point of attack. Whaoo !! The fact here is every offensive lineman drafted by the dolphins since 2012 have had this label. All three of Miami guards Billy Turner, Jamil and Thomas are all week at the POA. So I wasn't surprised when the interim coach Dan Campbell said after the loss to the patriots "we lost most of our individual battles tonight." But I was surprised he didn't fire Jon Benton who hasn't done much to help improve the struggling OLine since arriving in Miami year ago.

Dallas Thomas is horrible. There is no other way to put it. Do they believe that players like Dallas Thomas and Billy Turner are the answers ??? or are they going to get serious and get some beef on the OLine like nature intend and todays NFL dictates?

Albert was absolutely the best available at the time. Last year, when the line had both Pouncey and Albert, Tannehill had I believe over 100 passer rating for all of those games. We also had the full Oline for the Tians and Texans this year. Injuries have killed production, and along with it lack of depth. We can somewhat get around having poor guards when the tackles are there, but absolutely can't when they are out. We have some major, major weak links in our Oline the last 3 years.

Both of the offensive coaching staffs we have had also seem to refuse to ever move the pocket and do common things that most coaching staffs do to mask having poor pass protection.

I agree, but theres only so long anyone can block for a QB when they hold onto the ball for too long.

Having guards who can get out and pull and block at the second level is great, however you have to have some strength at the poa or good Dlines will just beat you up. If coach Dan sticks around I hope this philosophy on drafting O lineman will change. I'm still holding out on Turner and Douglas a bit longer.

I wish somebody would do an indepth comparative analysis (and maybe there is one out there) of the amount of resources each team has spent on the oline in the last 8 years or so - draft picks, lets say rounds 1-4, highly regarded FAs (based on stats, probowls, etc), and the sheer amount of money spent.

I'm willing to bet any amount of money in total resources completely wasted this franchise is at or near the top while continually having a group of players that perform at or near the bottom.

I just think the problem is piss poor coaching, coupled with piss poor drafting, which all comes from piss poor decisions from the man that pulls all the strings at the end of the day.

In fact just a quick google gives me a quick and simple analysis which has us #6 overall in percentage of cap $$ committed to oline: http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/positional/offensive-line/

So its not like the team hasn't tried to address it, just the people running everything from ownership down to the coaches don't know what the **** they're doing - which is quite obvious to anybody who watched this team go completely down the toilet from about 04' to today.

you ever think about the distance to the sticks dictates how long he has to hold the ball at times? and why exactly this team gets behind the sticks so much?

It's because Tannehill doesn't elevate the play of his teammates. His supernatural aura isn't strong enough to radiate the energy to the guards and tackles. Pouncey is really a crappy center and Tannehill's magic essence is making him play at a pro bowl level, but it only reaches Pouncey. In fact, the reason why they get more successful when Tannehill is under center is because he is closer to the other linemen and actually touching Pouncey.

Was it a coincidence that Satelle played better than expected last season and Pouncey was poor at guard? I think not. It's the limited reach of Tannehill's aura to blame.

It's all really simple.

Damn you Tannehill!!!

tannehill isn't a leader. he constantly allows his self and his team to fail. his pocket presence is pathetic. sometimes he makes a play but hundreds of times I've seen him step into a blitz, hold the ball way too long, or wait until the minute and barely escape. He's always getting sacked especially when the game is on the line. He clearly not the QB we need moving forward but it seems we are stuck with him.

On a more serious note. I think it is because they do a poor job at impeding the progress of the defenders.

Isn't this thread about the O-line???

Regarding the O-line, when healthy, we have 3 first rounders on it. (Albert, Pouncy and James). I believe PMJ's analysis above is correct. When healthy and these three are playing together, we have success as does RT. They are also able to help compensate for our weakness at guard. We need to continue to invest in the O-line and most importantly, we need depth! As soon as one of the big three go down, we are scraping the bottom of the barrel. That in my opinion is our biggest weakness. No depth at all on the O-line.

What's amazing is the Pats have two players starting on the offensive line who were undrafted free agents
both have more offensive snaps than anyone on our offensive line.

They also have 3-forth rounders, 1-5th rounder,1 first rounder,1 second rounder, and 1 undrafted free agent

The guard play has been bad and we have no depth, there is no denying that. There is also no denying that if a team does not believe in its QB as their leader, they never play to their potential. Think we got a little of both on this team.

I'm not sure how that squares up to RT's performance when the O-line is healthy and the starters are playing as a group.....
