Just a thought here. What harm would there be to either party in arranging a huge salary for year 6, in anticipation of Jason Allen becoming an elite player? The sticking point at the moment is the length of term and whether or not the Dolphins would be paying him what he was worth in year six or whether he should be sampling the free agent market for a payday. I think the solution is to look ahead five years and build year six as an extremely lucrative year for Jason Allen, should he rise to his ability and remain healthy. Year six should be an option year for the Dolphins.

Apparently, bonus money, incentive money, and salary are presenting no impediment to the progress of the deal, just that final year five years distant. Give him a huge year six and if he is a keeper we keep him. Five years is an awfully long time and a lot can happen with a player and a team in that amount of time (think Wanny to now). Why fight over the future when the kid hasn't been on the field for an NFL snap? Get him to camp now. It would be the best thing for all parties. Just a thought.

I think that's a pretty common practice when putting together contracts. The only problem is that most of the time the player never sees that big salary at the end. They end up either getting cut or asked to restructure.

Allen wants a 5 year deal and the Dolphins want a 6 year deal, thats the problem

uhmm okay

That is my point. A loaded option year six solves the impasse. Doesn't it?

A loaded year six does, but then come year six your are putting yourself in an akward situation. If he does become a star you have to pay him a large amount of money, or cut him. You could always pull for a trade, assuming he is willing to restructure long term for a new team. However if he isn't most teams wouldn't look for the trade knowing they may be forced to pay big only to have him walk away the next year. Also teams would know we'd be in a situation to cut him, therefore his value would drop. They should just sign with the 5 year contract, seems fair to me.

There needs to be a maximum length and amount on rookie contracts (like in the NBA) because it would prevent many rookie holdouts

there is a lenght set it was changed this year in the cba to allow for picks 1 through 16 to get 6 year deals. allen being the 16 pick would fall into this catagory.Dont get to worried when tye hill signs if he gets 6 years allen will get six if he gets 5 allen gets five

this is all about the player vs the team being able to void that sixth year... why not have a contract similar to the one Wimbley signed with the Browns, a sixth year that is voidable by the player once he reaches very attainable playing time threshholds?

I'm not sure why Jason Allen would go for that. If he's an elite player by then he could sign somewhere for a signing bonus equal or more than what we would pay out in that 6th year. If he's not an elite player he could get cut beforehand and not see the money.
