I was wondering, since Randy Starks had this all pro year for us this year, and he has the size to play a NT, why dont we give him a shot @ NT for us? We have nothing to lose, and if it does not work out he can always go back to being a nasty DE. We have 2 really good DEs in Langford and Merling, and IF we can find out NT in a player already on the team, this fills 1 major fole on our def. He also had some past exp playing DT in the 4-3 up in Tenn. What do you guys think??

He played NT for us last year against the Ravens when Ferguson went down and Soliai was suspeneded for the game. He OK for awhile, but it seemed that he wore down quickly. He just wasn't big enough to make the other team double him like you want on an NT.

I do believe he is the backup still if Ferg and Soliai are unavailable.

Yea I have been saying this as well..

He would def have to bulk up maybe gain 20 pounds or so..

I think it could def work...

Jay Ratliff did if for Dallas..but they do play a 1 gap 34 as opposed to our 2 gap

Either way I am glad we know we need a NT ...Cause if we know I am sure Tuna knows

This is ludicrous...Lets take a guy who is playing at ALL PRO level at DE and move him to NT...??? Some people just don't make sense around here.

Starks (listed at 305) just doesn't have the mass you need in a NT. We need a 330 pounder who can clog the middle, hold the point and command double teams so other guys can make the play

Starks has just come on at DE for Miami. He was close to a Pro Bowl season in 2009. You don't kill that by moving him to NT. Keep him at DE for sure in 2010.

The reason why this could make sense is that its easier to find a De then it is a NT..

If Starks can gain weight and play the position it would be huge...

We have Merling and Langford..as well as that we could eaisly find another De in mid to late rounds....Or even FA

Finding a NT is really hard..

Espeically now that alot of teams are going to the 34...I want a good young NT too...

But I dont wanna take him 12th in the draft..

This would be a really could option

Why don't people understand the primary role of a NT is to command consistent double teams?

Terrible idea ... for one he doesnt have the size to play NT in a 3-4 scheme and we dont need to band aid to fix our problem at NT we need a whole knew player. Our NT of the future is not on the roster right now and for the 3-4 scheme to work you need a monster in the middle to take on 2 or 3 blockers on every play. (i.e. Vince Wilfork, Albert Hanyesworth, Casey Hampton, Haloti Ngata, etc ...)

Whats to say that if Channing Crowder gained 80 pounds.. that he could not?

Yea you may have something there....

Keith Traylor started as a MLB then was moved to NT... He anchored a few super bowl winning D's

Starks has the frame..Starks has done it before...

It could be an option..Not saying just do it..

but something to be explored..

Hell they tried Vonnie Holliday at OLB

You do realized Ngata was an end first...they only moved him beacuse of injury.. Vince Wilfork has been moving along the line as well..

I like the idea, but he really excelled at RE last year for us. And everyone saying we need a huge NT (330 lbs.) look no further than Jason Ferguson, who is 310-315 pounds at the most. He could put on the extra 5-10 pounds for sure, but the question is whether or not he'll be as effective.

I always believed that a players height was just as important as weight when looking for a pure NT. It really is a position where leverage is so important and if you have a 6' 4'' or taller always getting down and holding up two blockers it can really put a lot of strain on their backs and cause chronic injury's. I'm not saying a taller guy can't do the job well I just think a pure NT should go around 6' 2''. If Daryll Gardner was a 3-4 DE rather than a DT I think he may have had a longer career.
