Like sparano, I'm assuming, if Philbin does bad, he still will get paid for the years on the extension that he's not here. Why guarantee money to a coach, essentially planting a thought in Philbins mind, "even if we do bad, I still get paid." If he doesn't currently like the situation in Miami, he won't care as much to succeed because he's still getting paid. I'm my opinion, this is just a stupid idea that may cause a coach to lose interest in his current job.

If Ross doesn't do this, philbin would have to work hard for his money.

Speaking of sparano, who's to say he wasn't happy in Miami, and didn't care much about winning his final year beachside he was already guarenteed money. Didn't work last time, why try again?

Lastly, I know it may be a plan to steal philbin for less money if he does well, but why would Ross worry about that if he's a billionaire ?

just my thoughts

I wouldn't have given him an extension. Let him be a lame duck. Its not like he would get head coaching offers elsewhere.

No NFL head coach would lose on purpose or not try as hard.

There are 32 in the whole nation.

He was given the extension to promote the idea he isn't going to be fired or let go at end of season.

We are currently a team that requires free agents to get better now. Most free agents would prefer coaching stability in signing. Why go to a team that could be completely rebuilt next offseason. That is why Phailbin received an extension, it isn't about Ross looking like a buffoon or clown, it is solely to appear as if their is stability and a team on the rise with a franchise QB. Those are selling points.

Also, extensions will allow Ross flexibility with either firing next year or giving a new deal if Phailbin gets to the playoffs and learns to fight more.

This does not in any way shape or form make us look inept, it is standard practice in NFL to remove the lame duck tag to current coach.

I also disagree with the extension. It was merely a PR stunt that fools nobody. If Philbin gets us in the playoffs next year, maybe a 2 year extension could be discussed, but I don't get the idea of extending him now.

who cares see mmorano he got an extension and still got **** canned, its not your money he is using or its not taking away from the salary cap. Like i said before Ross got money to burn so **** it i'd love to work for ross can get away with doing half ass jobs and still get paid like a boss!!

Why do i have a feeling this is going to be 2011 all over again ? In't this exactly what they did to Tony and how did that worked out...

Big difference was in 2011 Chad Henne was coming off 15 TD, 19 Int season leading into 2011. Our QB situation is a lot better than it was back then. That alone should produce better results.

i PRAY THAT YOU'RE RIGHT.

By that logic we should have been substantially better this year since qb play had improved.
In fact Tannehill has improved every year yet we are like one game better .
Qb wins nothing all by himself. If you have a poor coach it will show in long run.
