We know that 2004 was among the worst offensive line the Dolphins have ever had. Rex Hadnot and Vernon Carey were seriously underutilized. McIntosh and McKinney didn't play well. Taylor Whitley, Wade Smith, and John St. Clair were laughably bad.

Move to 2005. Damion McIntosh and Seth McKinney both make major improvements - especially in run blocking. Rex Hadnot and Vernon Carey solidified the right side of the line very well. Jeno James continues to be consistent.

McIntosh's release isn't that bad because of what his cap number would've been. I think L.J. Shelton should be just as good - that would be a zero-sum game, which is fine. The rest of the line, having improved as much as they did - why tinker? Tom Ashworth isn't really that great, and moreover it seems unnecessary. Why move Hadnot and Carey again?

It just seems like sticking with McKinney, Hadnot, and Carey on the right side would be better than Hadnot, Carey, and Ashworth considering the cost.

because Ashworth would give our line a full set of good starters, he would start at RT, Carey at RG, Hadnot at C, James at LG and Shelton at LT

Carey is a natural guard. The Fins would have two stud tackles. The move would have Hudson Huock's blessing. With Culpepper and Brown in the backfield a stud O-Line would take our offense from ok to very good.

depth and competition

NUFF SAID! During the season, I"M POSITIVE that one of our guys will suffer SOME kind of injury..plus Ashworth is pretty good. I think he WOULD be an upgrade. You can NEVER have too many offensive linemen.

EIther way, the better the guys up front are, the better performance we're all gonna enjoy from Ronnie Brown this year.

I haven't paid close attention to Ashworth's career, so I have no idea how good he is or what his potential might be. However, my feeling is that our coaching staff sees Vernon as better suited to Right Guard, therefore last year he wasn't playing at his best position. If Ashworth is a true Right Tackle, you can get some imrovement at that spot, and by moving Vernon to his best position you give him the best opportunity to succeed and further strengthen the line. So, if the staff has a conviction on Ashworth as an upgrade over Vernon, they should go after him.

Oh, first post by the way. Nice to be here. Bleeding aqua and orange since the 1981 season.

Vernon Carey did quite well at RT and Rex Hadnot did quite well at RG. For that matter, Seth McKinney did quite well at C.

With the apparent interest in Mawae and Bentley, it doesn't seem like it was Saban's first priority to shift Hadnot to center. I also don't believe that Saban is constantly scheming to fool all these other teams into thinking we're really doing something different. It seems like a secondary plan, and for what it would cost for Ashworth - not only financially but in terms of again shuffling the line - it is hardly worth it.

Well, read the front page, some NFL people disagree with you!

If Ashworth joins the Dolphins, it likely would trigger changes along the line. Former first-round pick Vernon Carey would move from right tackle to guard and Rex Hadnot, who subbed for free agent Seth McKinney last year, would play at center. L.J. Shelton, a recent signee from the Browns, and veteran Jeno James would man the left side.

"If the Dolphins get (Ashworth) and move some guys around to where their strengths are utilized a little bit better, all of sudden they go from being average up front to pretty good," one league source said.

Its worth it if it makes the line better. Seth McKinney isn't the answer at center either. The only reason he did okay last year was because of Houck. Before that, he was terrible.

I think he'd start and at worse, give us depth should be take on any unfortunate injuries in camp or during the season..

NJFF, I became a FH VIP last night, when or how do I get the VIP Member Banner on my avatar? J/C, thanks!

Depth and competition. We now only have two reliable Tackles in Carey and Shelton. Without Ashworth we would still be in the market in drafting a Tackle. With Ashworth we can wait until next year to address the tackle position in the draft and focus on defense in this draft. I think Saban sees a lot of defensive players in this draft that can contribute in our scheme.

well then, welcome. With all the stuff going on, things I'm sure are hectic, be patient. A post in any questions/suggestions thread will get response, the staff watches that forum.

If we upgrade our o-line we will be unstoppable.

What exactly don't you get?

Many have mentioned Carey as not progressing very well at T and sources mentioned they feel he's a better fit at G.
It's not like your moving him to a position he hasn't played, same with Hadnot.

Hadnot was ready to displace McKinney at C last year, it's just a matter of time and a position were not content with as long as McKinney is there.

Adding Ashworth clearly upgrades the line.
Allows Carey to move inside giving us 2 strong guards.
Allows us to move Hadnot to C and to release a major underachiever in McKinney.
2 Solid T in Shelton and Ashworth.
