After watching about 5 or 6 videos on Groves I've come to the conclusion that he should be our 2nd round pick (#32 overall). I've broken down my reasons into an easy to read format.
1) At 6-3 260lbs he cannot stay at DE in the NFL and will have to make the move to OLB which he had done in his last season at Auburn. Can he play OLB? Absolutely. He's proven he can if you watch the tapes, in fact he's probably a better player standing up anyways. He runs in the 4.5-4.6 range and again if you watch the tapes it's not a joke, he can just flat out fly to the ball, he just explodes to the ball. I can't tell you how many times you watch him and he's already in the QB's face as the ball is snapped, it's really incredible to watch. He absolutely has a nose for the ball and his instincts are top notch.
2) During his career at Auburn he totaled 26 sacks, 36 Tackles for a Loss and 117 tackles. During his time he has been injured, like his last season at Auburn where he had dislocated toes so his stats would have been even better if he was healthy the whole time. Compare his production to Vernon Gholston for example: Gholston has had a total of 87 tackles, 31 Tackles for a Loss and 23 sacks. Now I know many of you will say that Groves played more games than Gholston but I think that favors Groves more, Groves has been a starter since 2004 at Auburn so he has more experience than Gholston who has only been a starter for 2 years at Ohio St.
My point is that if we do take Jake Long #1 overall we really should look to take Groves at #32, he's very impressive if you watch him on the field and he has all the tools to become a great OLB in the NFL.
Bash away my friends!
