I see our defensive backs giving the receiver about 7 yards from LOS every play. I saw it some during the game tonight and I remember Coyle did a lot of this last season. I hope this is not going to be a pattern of what we'll see during the regular season. Shouldn't Finnegan, the aggressive player that he, be right up at los and do what he does best which is disrupting the receiver? Grimes should be right up at the line too. I just hope Coyle can change this and let our DB's play more aggressive. Sure we may give up a big play every so often but we'll also get some turnovers and that's what this defense needs! I don't care right now because it's preseason but when the regular season starts I want our D to be STOUT instead of giving the receiver a for sure curl route every down.

Anyone else have an opinion on this? Maybe I need a change of perspective on this.

Last season our defense was ranked 4th in opposing teams passer rating, even with crap LBs and playing other teams practice squad players. So I wouldn't worry about Coyle's use of DBs.

Preseason game 1

Forget the preseason games I'm talking about this happening during the season. After seeing Roddy white hit that curl route on Finnegan it gave me a flashback of all that dreaded space I saw last season.

The defense didn't have many turnovers either. I guess you're right though, the Db's are least our worries on the D when we have players like Wheeler and Ellerbe out of position every play!

It's the preseason. It really doesn't mean anything with this coverage and what we see right now.

Okie dokie i'm not going to trip unless I see it during regular season. Coyle you better bring it this season!

Sorry, but I totally f*****g hate it when they say its preseason.. relax.. it means nothing.. Once again.. and I say this for like the 12th year in a row.. IF THEY CANT DO IT IN PRACTICE.. HOW IN THE HE** WILL THEY DO IT IN THE REGULAR SEASON??

ok.. rant off.. going back to my sheltered little world

We had a solid amount of turnovers, though a huge percentage of those were from Patterson who is not here.

At this point they're getting into game shape. they're not worried about bringing out these blitz and coverage packages.

Hahah Nice rant man! I feel you though but if we see it carry over to the regular season then I'll be right there ranting too!

I want our Offense to score more points but if the D can't tighten up and they **** their pants after each scoring drive, well it would be all for nothing. It would be pointless, literally.

It happened last year too, but we managed not to get burned on it somehow. I'm not counting on being that lucky again. I absolutely hate giving that kind of cushion, it makes it easy to do screens, and gives speedy guys a free release. With the new rules, we need to have our corners on the line, and be jamming the receivers in the first 5 yards where it is still legal.

This is one of the reasons why I don't like Coyle as the DC. Too many times last season he had the CBs playing 10 yards off the WRs, and teams marched down the field by completing 5-8 yard passes to wide open receivers. And, when Coyle came in and changed the defensive scheme in his first year the run defense suffered. Year two saw Ireland swap LBs, and the run defense got even worse. Coyle seems like a decent Secondary Coach, but IMO is not a good DC.

Here's an interesting stat for you:

We were top 10 in scoring defense, the other 9 teams in the top 10 in scoring defense averaged 11.4 wins. Besides us the Cardinals were the only other team with less than 11 wins at 10.

The year before very much the same story, we were top 10 in scoring defense and again had the worst record of the other top 10 teams.

In two seasons under Coyle we are 5th in scoring defense with only the Seahawks, 49ers, Bengals and Panthers ahead. And those other teams all protect the defense somewhat with good running games.

It seems evident to me that Coyle's unit is doing its job. Actually, it borderline miraculous that our defense is in the same conversation as some of those other teams with us having such a putrid offense, those teams are all able to run the ball pretty effectively. We're hoping to be most like the Bengals from that list, a team that doesn't give up many points and is able to destroy opponents with the passing game once in a while. At least we have part of that equation right.
