I see so many comments and even articles questioning our 3rd WR.
(See the Miami Herald Blog on Vick, that calls his return game "dependable yet pedestrian")
IMO Welker did an excellent job at that position and in the slot. When you watched his return game he was 1 man shy of taking it all the way on more than a few occasions.
I see no problem with competition for the WR position, and how it correlates with special teams.
That being the case, I cant see any other player who can do both things as well as Welker.
Hagan was drafted for a reason, but should we be willing to let Welker (who plays like Jeravicious) not get his playing time?

My guess is Hagan and Welker will compete for this position. Let the better WR win, but if Hagan does get the spot, hopefully we can use Welker as much as humanly possible i.e. to spell Booker or Chambers, Returns or 4 WR sets.

Just a thought.

Go phins.

The kid from Auburn will push for that position as well. It's nice to have good competition in TC.

i think it will be great if we have a battle for our 3rd spot as long as they all are playin good and not like are battle for the running game a few years ago. think about it, if we have more than one good WR we wont have to worry about fatigue, there will always be someone to come in and smoke the defense.
look at indy, i would be scared if they put there 3rd WR in as the main reciever, no matter who they had on the feild the DBs had to be at the top of there game

Welker deserves to be considered the 3rd WR until someone beats him out. Same thing in PR and KR, Welker has proven he's worthy, reliable and explosive.

The thing is... is that Welker cant do both during the season. He is a solid WR, and a solid KR/PR... but his little body cant handle the wear&tear of all 3. As I predicted... he got worn down... which made him less explosive as a KR. (same thing happened to Daunte Hall)

Personally, I want to either move him to the 3WR perminatly... and take away his KR duties (not PR... he is too dependable to replace returning punts)...

OR... have him as a full time KR/PR, and not be used much at WR.

I dont care which way it goes... but I dont want to see him returning kicks and catching passes this season...

Welker's fine as a WR in this offense. He was an effective chain mover when our QB decided to throw accurately enough to hit a smaller target.

But we're not going to have just one 3rd WR. We're going to have two. When Chambers and Booker are on the outside and we put in a 3-WR package, Welker will hit up the slot most likely...exactly where he's suited to play. When we decide to move Chambers into the slot (something that paid dividends late last season) then Welker just CANNOT play the outside (yet)...not on that 5'8" frame. In that situation my guess is Hagan comes in as our 3rd WR on the outside with Chambers in the slot.

We needed to draft a WR really high because we were one injury away from having Wes Welker, all 5'8" of him, try and start as our outside WR. It would be that or Kelly Campbell on the outside. Wes is clearly suited more for the slot. He does remind me of Hines Ward, who can play outside, but he doesn't have Hines Ward's girth.

Now we have both Hagan and Aromashodu, and either of them could play outside.

I wouldn't use the size thing with Welker. Their was a guy named Steve Smith that was the best WR in football last year. Not saying I don't agree but heart and a good scheme and anyone with skills can be serviceable. I am not worried about the WR position anymore because I love our depth with Welker, Cambell, Auburn because I can't spell his name, Gibson who many seem to overlook, and Hagan who I think has potential to star in the league.

Aromashodu, we should just call him Devin that is his first name... Hagan will be a big star in my opinion and I think he should get lots of playing time this season. in 3rd and 10 or 15 situations I think Welker is the best option to have in the slot because he is reliable and can move the chains. However on 1st and 2nd downs I think Campbell is the best option to have in the slot because he has tons of speed and is also experienced with Culpepper. I really like Hagan but he doesn't quite have the speed to be a slot WR except maybe when we need a first down. Aromashodu would be a great player out of the slot but he may not make the team. Vick is a huge question and with our depth won't make the team unless he's 4th QB

I agree with almost everything but Welker. I wouldn't be disappointed if someone took the slot away from him don't get me wrong but I thought he was very reliable and tough and will not surrender his spot without a fight. Aromashodu will make the team IMO. Hagan IMO will be a Rice or Chris Carter as far as not needing speed to become great even though he really is fast as far as feild speed is concerned and that is more important than 40 speed to me.

IMO Hagan will be groomed to be Bookers eventual replacement if his contract becomes too expensive to keep.

I believe Campbell will compete with Welker and possibly Aromashodu for the slot position although the later could also possibly challenge for the ouside WR spot too.Yet another example of a versatile player.

My guess is that Campbell will get most of the 3rd WR starts with Welker mixed in.I only say this because of Peps familiarity with him.QBs do have favorite WRs and Campbell was a favorite of his in Minny.

Well said, I agree.

Yeah Marty will be 7mill next year if a new deal isn't worked. I like Marty though and I beleive he will show what made him so good in Chicago for us this year.

Why do so many of you think the 3rd WR will only play the slot? The 3rd WR should allow us to create mismatches for defenses. Whether it be from the slot or on the outside. I haven't seen Welker play on the outside (in the pros or in college) so I'm not sure he can do that. Campbell has played both and providing he doesn't have too much rust from missing all of last season should have the edge. Hagan and Aromashodu have a lot to learn
and depending on how quickly they can get up to speed in the pro game should provide quality depth early on.

I don't because I beleive Chris will be moved all over the feild and get alot of plays out of the slot to keep him freed up more.
